Download

CrystalDiskInfo.zip and save it on your desktop.
Extract the .zip file into a new folder.
In this new folder, run the tool DiskInfo.
When the tool is finished, it will show some information about the hard disc.
Note: Resize the window so that all information is visible.
Take a screenshot. Read this on how to take a screenshot.
Upload the image file to a file-sharing site and post the download link.

I can't save the screen shot to a file - it only goes to the clipboard - and then I can paste it into another application. I've attached a snip of the CrystalDiskInfo output. Let me know if this works. Thanks.

The disk has uncorrectable sectors. Best to replace it.

I think so. We can try to fix it but that may lead to other corruptions.

Peter, I greatly appreciate the help you've provided. If you're willing to help me out further, I'm willing to try. In any case, it's been good to work with you and recover some of the functionality of this computer and correct the errors we've worked. I need to quit for tonight. If there is more we can try, I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks again - you're ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The following might take several hours to complete. You can do it overnight if you like.
Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories.
Right-click on Command-prompt and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.

Code:
chkdsk c: /f /r
At the question "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)", press Y.
Restart the system.

Do not press any key during the restart. This will allow CHKDSK to start.
Wait for this to complete. Please note that this may take several hours. Let it run even if it looks like the process has stopped!
On completion, the system will restart automatically.

Please report back when the above is done.

Ran chkdsk /f /r last night. Computer was ready for login this morning. Ran sfc /scannow from elevated command prompt - no problems reported. Tried again to create a restore point, received the same error message for the VSS service.

Peter, tried running chkdsk twice yesterday - got to stage three, cursor kept blinking, but computer was frozen. had to shutdown using the power button. The second time I took a picture of the chkdsk screen.

When it looks like chkdsk is stuck, please let it run for a few hours more. It needs some time to proceed when there are bad sectors.

No problem. Take your time.

Peter, ran chkdsk overnight - it ran without a problem. When I ran ListChkdskResult I received an error message (tried to run this 3 times). Attached is chkdik screen on completion and ListChkdsk error screen.

It looks like you are running ListChkDskResult from a temporary folder with .rar extension. Move the file ListChkDskResult.exe to your desktop and run it from there.

Peter, I did run it from the desktop with .exe extension - same error message. The link in NOte 18 doesn't take me to ListChkdskResult doesn't take me to that program - I downloaded if from a sysnative Dropbox location.

Create a new directory, for example c:\temp
Move the file ListChkDskResult.exe to that directory and run it from there.

I tried that under the account we've been working in all along (administrative rights) and in the built in WIndows 7 Administrator account - same results as before in both accounts

Okay, we leave it then. Your screenshot in message #34 shows there are bad sectors too.
Are you able to create a restore point now ?
