[SOLVED] SFCFix 1 corruption, struggling to upgrade to Windows 10 error code 0x80072F8F - 0x20000

Fix does not appear to have processed correctly, so I'll have to work out why. Will get back to you as soon as possible.

Looks like I missed a command from the script I gave you, sorry for that. So let's try again with a corrected script ...

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt and report the result.
  • If it fails, attach a zipped C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your next reply.

Please follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.

  • Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
  • Attach this log to your next reply.

Capture Process Monitor Trace

  • Download and run Process Monitor
    • Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
  • Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
  • Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

    i3yiUac.png

  • Select the File menu ... Save ... and save the file to your Desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
  • Zip up and upload to a file sharing service.
  • Provide the link to LogFile.PML
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Also attach a copy of your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log ... with your reply.

I get this error when I open Process Monitor or when I press capture. No processes showing up

Right click on Procmon.exe and select Run as Administrator

Do you still get the error ?

OK, trying to work out what's going wrong. Will get back to you as soon as I have.

Right, let's see if this gets us moving again ....

Section 1 ....

  • Click on Start and in the Search program and files box type cmd.exe
  • From the search results list click on cmd.exe to open a command window.
  • Now copy/paste the following command to the command prompt ....
  • wmic qfe list > "%userprofile%\desktop\updatelist.txt"
  • Hit Enter
  • Wait for the command to finish processing.
  • Close the Command Prompt Window
  • A file named updatelist.txt should be on your desktop.
  • Please check through it and see whether the following update is installed ... KB3033929

If it is already installed please move to section 3 of these instructions ...

If not ....

Section 2 ....

Once you have rebooted see if you can now run procmon.exe and if you can, please follow the directions I gave in post #27

If not proceed to section 3.

Section 3 ....

If KB3033929 is already installed ....

Please download this older version of ProcessMonitor, (version 2.96) and see whether that will run ... procmon.exe (version 2.96) ... then follow the instructions in post #27

Looking over your logs. This may take a while, so please be patient. Back as soon as I can.

Can you please provide the following log file for me to look at ....

C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log

Looking over your log now. As before, this may take a while, and I'll be back as soon as I can.

Please can you attach the following logs (if available)

C:\Windows\setupact.log

C:\Windows\setuperr.log

Also can you please answer the following questions ...

  • What version of Windows 7 are you running ?
  • Do you use a VPN at all when connecting to the internet ?
  • What security software do you have installed (Anti-Virus etc) ?
  • Do you use a 3rd party firewall (ie not the default Windows 7 firewall) ?

Windows 7 Professional Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1
no VPN currently
Just Windows Defender since Norton expired
Just Windows firewall

C:\Windows\setuperr.log is blank but searched windows folder and found some that aren't blank in C:\Windows\Panther\NewOs\Panther (setuperr (2).log) and C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\Panther

Also I did run this nisudf regedit last month to get a game to work on windows 7 and wasn't sure how to undo it entirely. It supposedly "disable TLS protocols <1.2 and force .NET to use OS TLS settings to request negotiation" so that may be it. Can't seem to attach that, but here's a notepad of what it says when opened in browser

Do you still have Norton installed on your machine, or have you uninstalled it ?

If uninstalled, did you uninstall it using Norton's Remove and Re-install Tool ... Uninstall your Norton device security product on Windows

If the former, please try running the tool linked to above, then re-boot your computer.

Once you've run the tool, or if you've already run it, then please do the following ...

  • Download FRST64 to your Desktop.

  • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
  • FRST will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
    • Copy/Paste or Type the following line into the Search: box.
    SearchAll:Norton;Symantec
    • Press the Search Files button.
    • When finished searching a log will open on your Desktop ... Search.txt
    • Please post it in your next reply.
