Please attempt to update again with ProcessMonitor running.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the square (CTRL +E) on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up the LogFile.PML and upload it to WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free and provide the link.

I should NOT reset Software Distribution folder first?
In the last log there is a reference to a problem with ActionList.xml, so let's try to reset the SD folder.
Please run the following commands in an elevated prompt.
Code:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
rename %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits

2023-03 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2019 (1809) for x64-based Systems (KB5023702) - Error 0x800f0983

Intended to retry but did a restart first... Until I lost connection it said "Getting Windows ready ..." on screen.
Still not up (not even a ping response) 😬

It can take some time for the next reboot when this message appears.

Nope... did not come up again. Got hold of Admin although he is off duty. He couldn't even do a "last good" was stuck in reboot loop. He had to use the snapshot from a couple of days ago to get it running! 😖😖
We have a backup from yesterday evening but will be several hours before it is online... reinstall would be a PAIN but if you don't have a good idea perhaps that's the only way?

As we cannot examine the reboot loop because the latest logs are no longer available, I think a reinstall is the only way to resolve all the issues. The original COMPONENTS hive of this server was damaged beyond repair, using a copy of an similar server is not without any risk. And may cause all sorts of other problems, as we are seeing now!

Another option instead of rebuilding the server from scratch is to try to perform a repair install.

1. Run Setup.exe from the ISO, and click the Install now button.
2. In the next screen select the option: "Go online to install updates now (recommeded).
3. Select the right Server 2019 version (with GUI) and click Next.
4. Next, accept the license terms and click Next.
5. In the next Window, select the option: Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings and applications.
6. The installation process will perform a compatibity check, please read this part carefully.
7 If you agree with the changes, click Next.
8. Follow the further intructions to complete the in-place-upgrade.

Thanks... Should I use last nights backup or the snapshot from a couple of days ago as base?
Currently restoring 😅

The restore was already complete so I started above reinstall on our version from last night.
Lets see what happens... still have the snapshot from a couple of days ago if it goes south ;) 😅

Upgrade Assistant
Plug and Play and RemoteFX USB device redirection is disabled by default in this version of Windows. You can re-enable this setting in Group Policy.

You can re-enable this policy after the repair install using gpedit.msc.

1. Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components
2. Open Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client > RemoteFX USB Device Redirection
3. Set "Allow RDP redirection of other supported RemoteFX USB devices from this computer" to Enabled.

Reinstall done.
Running WUP:

- Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player for Windows Server 2019 for x64-based systems (KB4577586)
... 🤞

Restart went fine.
Runing WUP again:
- 2023-03 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2019 (1809) for x64-based Systems (KB5023702)
- 2022-08 Security Update for Windows Server 2019 for x64-based Systems (KB5012170)
- 2021-01 Update for Windows Server 2019 for x64-based Systems (KB4589208)
...
KB5023702 takes a long time again and stuck at 20% like all the other times... 🤞 🤞

WUP went very well in the end, although it felt like a long time in comparison to the AD server back then... no more updates available.
Did sfc /scannow and it returned with no errors ... YEEESSS 🙏 🙏 (y)(y)😁

Now I just have to reinstall Danish and do the RemoteFX change!!

Thank you so much for your patience and a happy (rest) Easter Holiday 🙏
