Speedtest

I have been experiencing connectivity issues of late (again) and it is quite annoying... I have to reset my modem multiple times to get connected again. Hopefully it holds out until I go to bed tonight!

I would reboot your modem (if I were you). That is quite a low number!

You weren't downloading anything when you ran the speedtest (Updates included)?

John,

What's the Make and Model of the device(s)-Modem/Router that you have?

Westell 327w - We got it in 2007.

Have reset, rebooted modem several times.

Nope - no downloading during last speedtest.

I'll get Verizon to run *whatever* tests tomorrow & hopefully find the problem.

Thanks....You may still use it if there's nothing wrong with it. Do you have a spare router, even an old B/G router? It might help to extend your wireless coverage to connect it to your Modem and we can set it up as WAP.

Good idea, please keep us posted.

If you go into the statistics of your westell router it should give you your advertised download and upload speed from Verizon if there are massive speed differences then it may be their end.

But can you download xirrus and install on computer furthest away from the westell and post a screenshot lets see what signal and channel is being used.

Thank you for your help!

John

Is that xirrus the furthest away 50 to 75 feet?

The signal first one in the list is fine but two things that really need to change one is the channel is 6 please change to 8 as it is on same channel as Linksys.

Second and more important security wise WEP is no good and has been cracked years ago and can be done in minutes, may as well have an open book for people to read sorry. You need to change it to WPA2-Personal AES on router and on wireless adapter use a 26 character key it is most secure and has not been hacked as of yet or that i am aware.

Regards Paul.

My laptop is 3 rooms away (3 walls) & 60-70 feet from router.

No linksys here.

EDIT: no access to the router for another hour or so when my 11 yr old leaves for school.

I'll ask about this later.... last time I changed *whatever* the kids screamed at me because no Wii, xbox, iPhones, etc... could connect. I screwed something up last year when I went into 192.168.1.1

A nearby neighbours router it maybe so a channel change is advisable.

Regarding changing the security yes will have to be changed on all devices that are currently configured to WEP.

We can speak later no problem if you wish to ask.

OH... so the channel we're using is the same as the visible linksys? And that may be interfering?

I see now we are both on ch 6.

What does it mean when BSSID2 show up? Is that like another level of security?

I think this linksys router may be brand new. Does the "Radio Type: 802.11n" mean that it can only handle 802.11n or can it handle 802.11g as well? I see the BSSID2 = g

When the channel is changed, will I need to do anything on my laptop or will the Intel 5100 wifi figure it out?

Thank you...

John

Also try unplugging the wireless phone(Power, and turn hand sets off) as it also seems to have interference........................

John... If you haven't done so, I would suggest moving closer to the router and re-checking your speeds... Interference from electric lines, appliances and other electronics can degrade the signal.

Poor signal quality can slow your wireless connection down seriously...

John, your network security is still on WEP, please do not forget to change it to WPA2 security so that your network will be protected.

Here's a useful Networking tool that you may use so that you'll know who's logged on to your network. You'll see the IP & Mac Addresses as well as Host Names.

I did unplug all telephones; tried outside jack; etc...

I really couldn't move any closer to the router - I'm plugged in via Ethernet - same results.

Installing a new modem from Verizon.... will post back.

Thanks!

John

Nintendo likes WEP the wii will use WPA but any Gameboys or DS's throw a fit.

As long as his neighbors have unsecured setups, who's going to take the time to break in..................................

Well... That pretty much rules out a wireless connection issue! :grin1:

If I think of anything else, I will be sure to share my thoughts... Although I am partial to the "Verizon is at fault" train of thought!

Yes rules out a wireless only issue but the channel should still be changed as it can cause interference still time outs and disconnections, 404 not found etc.

As for WEP encrytption cipher has been cracked many years ago and can be cracked in minutes, it is anything but secure

John you have sensitive data on your computer/s no doubt such as financial maybe account numbers etc, etc are you willing to pay the price for a few PSP's or DS or gameboys.

PS3, Wii and Xbox all support WPA2 AES.

IT is not a matter of if you get hacked but when with WEP and Eset as good as it is will not protect against everything it is an impossibilty.

There is a workaround by using a router that is capable of using multiple SSID's so you can have one SSID fro your computers and Xbox etc on WPA2 AES and another SSID for WEP for the PSP's etc reducing the security risk significantly.

In the meantime you could use WPA2 AES and connect the PSP up to PS3 and DS to Wii i believe i advise you do that as a containment.

Sorry John i have been a bit blunt but you need to know that the risk is very high and it needs negating quickly.

Now to the speed using ethernet is the same does it affect all machines?

Is there heavy gaming online happening when your speed drops down?

What is your advertised speed download and upload from Verizon(not the results of speedtest )that i want?

Is the westell supplied to you by Verizon or did you buy that router?

Hi Paul. . .

No need to be sorry for bluntness; please speak your mind. I prefer the cold, hard facts in English because I'm just 4.5 years new to Windows and never learned much about networking or hardware.

All systems here are affected, even 2 laptops that don't live here (they came for a visit w/ the kiddies friends). My HP laptop had -0- Internet connectivity/ speed issues when tested at public wifi hot spots or connected to another network.

The kids are Gamers, but most of the Speedtest runs occurred when the kiddies and devices were asleep and all showed dismal results. At one point, my HP laptop was the only system on the network. So... I got the same basic results regardless of the total number of systems online or activity. I've never had speeds this low during the last 5 years w/ Verizon DSL. A few others that have Verizon DSL in the area report all is normal (well... as normal as can be expected for Verizon DSL).

The only numbers I see when I go into 192.168.1.1 -
Code:
[FONT=Lucida Console][COLOR="#000080"]Connection Rate[/COLOR]

3360 Kbps Down
864 Kbps Up[/FONT]

Is that what you were looking for?

Currently, I'm on a WPA secured wifi connection (w/ permission!); Windows Wireless Connection Status reads 65 Mbps.

Speedtest shows:

The Westell 327W was purchased from Verizon in 2007.

I got a new one from them ($100+), which I will install later today.
