[SUGGESTION] To all analysts: HP Envy 700-074 model BIOS corruption, bug, etc

Did the *A5 BSOD only occur when attempting to go into sleep or waking the system? I would use the system for a few days before making a judgement even if it's not crashing now. If an 8.1 update is all it takes, then you should be fine. I mean, if the crashes stop, that's what fixed it. You didn't make any other changes.

Cyberpower

Eh, their pre-built systems are decent but I am biased. I would go with Dell, but Cyberpower is okay.

I prefer Dell as well.

No, no other changes.

Yes, my system ONLY crashed during sleep or hibernate, what caused the crash is the awakening of the system, at that point it would restart and the Win dmp error files would generate, always the same exact dmp files.

Never crashed any other way.

What's funny is that as soon as I updated and restarted, HP Support Assistant popped up with important message, it said:

"This Computer Has Not Been Tested With Windows 8.1 and So Updating is not advised at this time as it may cause the system to become unstable and other issues."

HA HA HA

The product number is the battery compartment of my laptop, so I'll enter it into the HP website tomorrow morning. As a side note about the nVidia issues, which is related to the lack of official HP presence on their forum. I don't think nVidia have any actual developers on their forums either. There seems to be Moderators, which just create new threads about feedback.

UPDATE: Woke up this morning all was well, PC woke with no issues. All day sleep and hibernate mode tested many times, no crashes. Left it in sleep mode for several hours, came back and it awoke fine, so Win 8.1 has eliminated the problem.

BUT, I still bought a new Dell XPS today, fully loaded. Will return the HP Envy 700-074, sorry HP, too much of an investment to take a chance with such problems in the first three days of purchase.

Thanks again for your update, that's very interesting. As I mentioned in my email, the unfortunate thing is even if updating to Windows 8.1 is a 'fix' for this issue, I don't think it's very feasible. Why? Because not every customer who purchases this Desktop is going to think of updating to Windows 8.1 as a fix for this. Also, it's still a problem.

I totally agree with you, and it is still unknown as to what other issues may arise as a result of an untested update. HP needs to find a permanent solution.

Sorry for the messages guys, didn't realize I had to confirm email lol. Anyways, here's my story. I am on my SECOND Envy 700-074 from Best Buy and both machines are having the same Hibernate/Sleep issue and same memory dump error with the ACPI.sys. I called HP for the second time today to let them know about my second machine having the exact same problem. I now am involved with their Outsourced Level 3 support and they are going to get back to me tomorrow with a possible solution. I told them I refuse to send it in for service because of my 14 day return policy at Best Buy (Yes I'm thinking of getting a different brand/model as well). Everything Patrick diagnosed about the ACPI BSOD is exactly what I am experiencing. Look at the Bestbuy.com 1 star reviews, they have same issue with hibernate/sleep too. I am very surprised on how little these techs know, (they just go strictly by what they are told and read the scripts in front of them).

Anyway, I am an IT professional myself as a Global Service Desk Analyst supporting primarily 2300 people in the US and an additional 8000 World wide after hours support as well. It's nice to see people here know what they are talking about and dealing with recent information on this issue, so thanks guys. Maybe we can figure this one out or at least get HP to realize they have a big problem on their hands with one of their expensive desktops. I will keep you guys updated once they call me back tomorrow. I will see if I can get someone in the US to talk to who knows their stuff from HP.

Oh and Patrick, which BSOD tools do you use to analyze minidumps? Thanks.

Cheers.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your post, it's good to see more and more people are having this issue and can confirm it. Definitely let us know what the Level 3 support says when they get back to you.

WinDbg.

Hello everyone. I have a co-worker that just bought one of these and had the same issue. Everytime I would wake it up from sleep it would crash. Earlier today I upgraded to 8.1 and have not seen any other crashes. Iset the sleep to start after one minute and gave gone through a handful of cycles. I started a chat session with HP prior to finding this forum and was notifiying them of the issue but the session was disconnected. I did give them a call back number and pasted the bugcheck code out of Event Viewer in the problem description so hopefully they call back. They at least have one more report of these.

Anyway thanks for the detailed info. You guys are awesome!

Thanks for the post, sorry to hear your live chat was ended abruptly! I received a response email and I was told the information I provided was passed on to the proper team, and I'd receive a response. Let's hope so!

Regards,

Patrick

It seems that HP are going to have to investigate the problem with the number of reported problems growing.

Just noticed this topic.

We get a few of these at work. Set a System Restore point (we have gotten 2 instances of a black screen error when doing this).
First step is to get ALL Windows Updates (includes hardware driver updates)
Second step is to get ALL HP updates (using HP Support Assistant
Third step is to upgrade to Win8.1
Fourth step is to get ALL Windows Updates (again)
Fifth step is to get ALL HP updates again (using HP Support Assistant and manually checking the website for 8.1 drivers)

Also, there's an HP message that comes up about 8.1 (in the Support Assistant) - you might want to check that also. I can't recall what it said.

If everything still fails/errors, then we start over with a wipe and reinstall and then the steps above.
If it still fails (this has happened once) we give the customer a new computer.

Just FYI - we (at work) have noticed issues w/the latest UEFI update and Win8.1 on the HP Envy M6-K025DX laptops.
Our only fix to date is to disable SecureBoot/UEFI and enable legacy boot

Before I returned this unit for a Dell XPS 8700, I did all Windows 8 updates and the crashes seemed to not happen upon wake/sleep. Can anyone on here confirm after ALL Windows updates that it fixes their issue?

I have not yet received an email since the information was supposedly passed along through HP, only a lot of people saying they have the same problem.

Right, so since I've gotten into contact with HP's Executive Customer Relations, I have not received any word regarding the crashes, but instead they've been nice enough to use my email to send me HP newsletters.

Have you ordered your new HP with Windows 7 yet?

;)
