Microsoft WU Components Reset
  • Download and run Microsoft FixIt 50202
  • Choose 'Aggressive Mode'.
  • Reboot (if the FixIt doesn't to it for you).

Lastly, check for Windows Updates. This will take much longer than usual, please be patient.

Let me know if the check for updates fails or succeeds.

contents of fixlog.txt:

then i ran the fixit 50202,let that complete then rebooted.

The first attempt did not successfully delete the registry key, that error message in Windows Update means 'access denied'.
Let's take it one step at a time and first try deleting the key manually.

Please let me know if you get stuck on any step or have any errors while attempting this procedure.

Manually Delete Registry Key

1. Click your Start button and type regedit in the search box.
2. Right-click on regedit.exe that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt.
3. The registry editor will open which is a window divided vertically into two panes. Make sure you scroll all the way to the top of the screen and click any black downward pointing arrows so that they turn white and all the keys are collapsed. It should look similar to the following.

4. Now click the arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and it will expand all the subkeys beneath it.
5. Scroll down and find the subkey named SOFTWARE and expand that. Continue expanding the following ones Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
6. Beneath Component Based Servicing you should see a key named ApplicabilityEvaluationCache
7. Right-click on the key named ApplicabilityEvaluationCache and select Permissions...
8. On the Permissions dialog click the Advanced button.
9. Click the Owner tab on the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
10. Click the Other users or groups... button
11. Type Everyone in the text box and click OK.
12. Check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
13. Click the Permissions tab again and uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent".
14. If prompted with a Windows Security warning with Add and Remove buttons, click Add.
15. Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
16. Make sure the Everyone group is selected in the Permissions dialog and ensure that the checkbox for Full Control under the Allow column is checked. Click OK.
17. Now, right click on the ApplicabilityEvaluationCache key and select Delete. Answer Yes to the confirm dialog.

Wow, it sure is persistent!

Let's try running regedit as System, which is the account that currently owns the key.

Run Regedit With Local System Authority
1. Download psexec and save to your desktop.
2. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box.
3. Right-click on cmd.exe that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt.
4. Copy/Paste the following line into the command-prompt and hit enter.
%userprofile%\desktop\psexec.exe -i -d -s regedit.exe

5. The registry editor will open and will be running at Local System privileges.
6. Follow steps 3 through 17 from the previous step and see if you get the same error.

my mistake psexec didnt install to desktop automatically, i moved it to desktop then done the same command again and this came up.....
