RATS! - still no change :(

this is where we get into real hunt-and-peck troubleshooting - if you feel you've had enough at any time, you still have the alternatives of
1) a reformat/reinstall (repair installs of Vista SP2 are not easy)
2) contacting MS WGA Support for assistance (it used to be free - but I have no ide whether that's still the case).
Just cry 'Uncle' and I'll give you details.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

Farbar Service Scanner Download

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

A reformat / reinstall is out of the question. I will go buy a new laptop (Windows 7, I will NOT be buying 8) before I do that. Far too much to put back onto a 5 year old laptop. I have kept it because the machine still runs very well. It has 4GB of RAM so Vista doesn't kill it as bad as usual.

I won't give up. I will do whatever you want me to do until you have had enough.

Ill run the scanner and post results in a bit.

Thanks for your help, Andrew

I still have the old hard drive by the way. Re-doing the clone is out of the question. It has been far too long and way too many changes have been made to my computer. However, if there was some kind of information contained on that drive that you would like I am sure I could pop it in and boot from it. However it is at home and I will be out of town for 5 weeks.

Everything looks OK there - assuming you are using a third-party firewall??

What happens if you attempt to use Windows Update, now?
What exact error message (if any) do you get?

Yes, Vipre Internet Security 2013 includes a firewall.

When I click updates from the control panel, the control panel freezes for quite a while. Then it will display the update menu and I will be unable to run updates. I will take a screenshot and post.

That's no surprise, considering its origins :)

I have to play pool now - and won't be in a fit state later ;)

If you don't hear from me before this time tomorrow, SHOUT!

Ah - try this, and see what happens....

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Well I did that and the message did not show up, it just said it never checked for updates and when I try to check it just would not do anything at all. Rebooted the computer and now I have the same message saying the service is not running.

Ready for the next step ;) Don't give up on me yet!

Sorry about that!
Please upload the following files (zip them first, please!)
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs\Application.evtx
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs\System.evtx
C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log

I'll see if I can see what's happening.

That's fine :) It's going to take me a while to absorb these, probably.
A quick look reveals the following...
the Search service is having problems.
Your Broadcom drivers are failing
Windows Media DRM may be broken.
IPv6 is having problems.
The Spooler service appears to be leaking
an iTunes install is repeatedly failing.
The Software Distribution folder may be damaged/corrupted.

Rename SD folder and subfolders
=========================
1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

net stop wuauserv
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir WRold
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DSold
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download Dold
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate SUold
net start wuauserv

3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose "Desktop" from the left panel as the location.

After that, please reboot in
environment.

4. Go to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator".
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Once complete, reboot, and test Windows Update.

Ok, thanks. I did that and still get the service is not running message. Would you like any other logs? Was that register file supposed to take some time to complete? After I hit run as admin it popped up for only a second or two. I rebooted, got the service is not running message, put back into normal startup and rebooted. Same message. I have forgotten. Is it normal for every windows thing I try to run it ask me if I want to allow the program to run i.e. windows says it an unidentified program. Whenever I do cmd, or msconfig, etc.

No - the commands normally complete pretty quickly (possibly less than a second), but I would have expected it to need confirmation on the last command.

Please post an example of your error message...

try this....
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and copy/paste the commands into the window
what happens?

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
