[SOLVED] [W10AU x64] S.Protection: can't create RestorePoints. FIX: UPDATED TO CREATORS UPDATE

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

The only service I see related to DCOM is Server Process Launcher - let me know if there are others I may have missed. That, RPC and Task Scheduler are all set to Automatic and currently running.

I noticed that despite me resetting them to Automatic, Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider, Microsoft Storage Spaces SMC, and Volume Shadow Copy were not running. I manually started them all but it didn't make any difference.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Please download the following file.
Right-click it and Run as Admin.
Answer Yes when prompted, wait for the command to finish and try again.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

The error message about searchindexer.exe is gone so that's good. But no change to my system restore issue, I'm afraid.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

You can only do that in the Configure System Restore tab, correct? Because that's where I get the error. Or is there some other place?

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Clicking on System Protection also yields the error.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

WARNING: This involves modifying the registry, please use EXTREME caution while following these instructions as one mistake can render your machine unbootable.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions
  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.
  4. Exit Registry Editor.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  6. Right-click the following services one at a time. For each service, click Restart:
    • COM+ Event System
    • COM+ System Application
    • Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
    • Volume Shadow Copy
  7. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  8. At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.
  9. If the VSS writers are now listed, close the Command Prompt window. You do not have to complete the remaining steps.

If the VSS writers are not listed, type the following commands at the command prompt. Press ENTER after each command.Note The last command may not run successfully.
    • cd /d %windir%\system32
    • net stop vss
    • net stop swprv
    • regsvr32 ole32.dll
    • regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    • regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    • regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    • vssvc /register
    • regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    • regsvr32 es.dll
    • regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    • regsvr32 vssui.dll
    • regsvr32 msxml.dll
    • regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    • regsvr32 msxml4.dll
  10. At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.
  11. Confirm that the VSS writers are now listed.

Then:
1. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\STORAGE\Volume
2. For each key under 'Volume', checked for the value 'Service' and make sure it is set to volsnap. If 'Service' does not exist do the following:
a. Created a new String Value called: Service
b. Set the value to: volsnap

Make sure you reboot after this, otherwise it will not work.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Here is the status of those services before I started/restarted them:
COM+ Event System - was set to Automatic and running
COM+ System Application - was set to Manual and not running; I reset to Automatic
Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider - was set to Automatic and not running
Volume Shadow Copy - was set to Automatic and not running

The list of writers in command prompt were:
Task Scheduler
VSS Metadata Store
Performance Counters
ASR
Shadow Copy Optimization
Registry
COM+ REGDB

I have two questions on the final step before I proceed. First, the first key under *volume* is quite strange:
_??_USBSTOR#Disk&Ven_USB&Prod_Flash_Disk&Rev_1100#FBI1405291227455&0#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}
Does this belong here?

Second, not counting that strange one, there are 10 other keys. In each of them the value *service* is set to simply "volume" in the Data column. Are you saying change all those to "volsnap"? Thanks for your clarification.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Hi Mighty Joe,

I did not make it clear that the repair install of Windows 10 would not delete your personal files, installed programs and settings.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Export the key prior to making any modifications.

1. Yes, these are normal. I have them in my registry too.

Actually before doing step 2, could you please remove CCleaner and try again. Also, please take a screenshot of all your installed programs.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

You said to export the registry key before making modifications however I already deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions per your earlier instructions.

Here is a list of my installed programs:

install.txt - Google Drive

I used CCleaner to generate the list but I have now uninstalled it.

I'll proceed with Step 2 but need you to first clarify, in each of the keys the value *service* is set to simply "volume" in the Data column. Are you saying change all those to "volsnap"? Thanks.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Let's hold off from step 2 from now. want you to export the Volume key before and if we have to make any changes just to be safe.
Uninstall SuperAntiSpyware and then reboot. Afterwards, try SR and report the result.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

CCleaner and SAS uninstalled. Rebooted. Didn't work.

Please let me know next step. Unclear what you mean about exporting key because as I mentioned, I already deleted it.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

You deleted the key I mentioned in my instructions, not the other one: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\STORAGE\Volume.
Correct?

Please export Event Viewer Logs for me to inspect.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Hmmm...

Let's check your disk SMART stats.
Note: If you have an SSD, please let me know and we'll do this differently.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

This makes no sense. I see my C drive but it has it listed as a Seagate Barracuda with a size of 931 GB that does not match my C which is 918 GB. I use Seagate external drives when I back up my computer which is a Dell. Is there something wrong here?
