Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

Here are the Fixlog.txt and CheckSUR.log files.

Btw, I haven't tried the Windows update the last two times. The SURT app asks if I want to install the Windows hotfix update, which I agree to. At the end of the app, the screen says Installation Complete, but I still see that the Start>Shutdown would try to do an update.

I haven't tried the update, because I don't know if that can cause a problem with the repair process. So, I'll wait until you tell me to try the windows update.

Thank you.

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

So, I'll wait until you tell me to try the windows update.
Allow Windows Update to install it and report which update it is and if it was successful.

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

When I clicked the Shutdown button, even though there was a yellow icon indicating it would install an update, the machine shut down normally, without any indication that it attempted an update. When I turned the machine back on, it started up normally. So, I ran Windows Update and it did not indicate that there were any important updates waiting. So I clicked on the Check for Updates button.

It eventually came back and said there was 1 important update to install, the same one which has been a problem. When it tried to install that update, the update failed with the same error code: 80073701.

The update which won't install is:

2017-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64 based Systems (KB4041681)

Thank you

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

Follow the instructions below.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
5. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB4019264 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
8. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

Here is the SearchReg.txt file.

Btw, I searched for KB4019264, but the update which won't install is KB4041681. Just mentioning it to be sure that's the one you wanted to search for.

Thank you

Btw, I searched for KB4019264, but the update which won't install is KB4041681.
There is a problem with KB4019264, which prevents KB4041681 to install properly.

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

Hi Peter,

When I didn't hear back, I figured I was supposed to try the windows update. It failed again with the same error code.

I ran the sfc /scannow and the CBS.log is much smaller than before, so I'll attach it to this message.

What do you think I should do next?

Again, thank you for all of your help trying to sort out this windows problem.

Best regards,
Mark

Oops.. Sorry, I didn't see your earlier message (#57).

Please disregard message #58. I'll follow the instructions in #57 and then attach the SearchReg.txt file.

Re: Windows 7 Won't Update - Error Code 80073701

Here are the Fixlog.txt and SearchReg.txt files. Again, sorry about any confusion. The forum used to send me an email when a new message posted, but it doesn't seem to do that anymore, so I periodically check for any new messages but must have missed the last one.

Thank you
