Something isn't right!

I think you need to do a deeper check on the HDD...

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

Edit: The extended test refuses to go beyond that sector and cancels after 10%.

Just started the test, but I already have a Reallocation Event Count of 18. Also three broken sectors show up in the error log. The most recent one:

Hi,

That is bad! and most likely the reason because the fix didn't work because I tested on a machine and it worked.

The HDD manufacture tool reports the HDD as OK??

The manufacturers tool can't even scan the online drive I noticed -_- It also refuses to run from my pendrive.
Anyhow the disks are four years old and both show signs of old age, so it's a consistent picture :P

Any clue how two sectors can lead to so many broken files? I seem to recall bad sectors are moved to some sort of buffer. Is that buffer only 18 sectors large or can we try something that gets the two broken ones reallocated?

The number of "spare" sectors depends of the HDD some don't have none.

By the number of corrupted files we replaced so far most likely there were several bad sectors that got "replaced" by the spare ones but the data stored there were lost.

I think you should consider doing a backup of you data, replace the HDD and do a clean install of Windows 10.

I have just ordered a new notebook and will migrate my data of the current one. Then I will replace the disk with a new one and use it as a Kodi box until the rest of the hardware gives:P
Thanks for your perseverence in this. At the very least I learnt a lot about Windows internals :thumbsup2:

Hi,

Sounds like you have a good plan :thumbs_up:

No problem it was a pleasure working it you. I also learned a few things... :smile:

My new computer arrives on Saturday and supposedly has Win10 Home installed.
So what's the easiest way to transfer preferences and such? I guess I could simply copy over my whole home directory (C:\Users\name\)?

Hi,

No you can't do that, you can only copy your files (documents, videos, images, downloads, etc.) not everything in your user profile!

For old Windows versions Microsoft have a tool to do the backup and restore of the user settings, but this is no longer available for Windows 10!

There are some programs, most commercial, that can help on that task, I'm not familiarized with any of those tools.

If you use the computer with a Microsoft account I think most settings will transfer when you login with the same account on the new computer, the same will happen for the browsers Google Chrome and Firefox if you have the settings synchronized with the cloud...
