Apologies for the delay - domestic chores
No apologies needed. Just take your time.
Odd, FRST is normally very stable.

I see there are a lot of entries about msiexec but there is a file msiexec.exe in windows/system32 which produces a normal page of help text when I run it

To start with it looks like the hosts file is empty. Please do following only.

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
    dir C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  4. When completed provide a screenshot of the Command Prompt window.

Hosts ;It was a clean install so I would not expect anything in there - should I?
So its effectively empty

The file should be there with the default content. Your attachment looks normal.
How was this machine connected to a network, wired or wireless ?

wired. i've only recently found a wireless driver so now it can do both but to date (and going forward) the plan is wired unless you advise otherwise. I think the wifi aerial is shot as signal strength is dire and it probably wont connect anyway

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

How did you manage to install KB4490628 on dec 11 2024 ?

the original problem was that after a fresh install of Win7 SP1 the computer would not do any windows updates.

I posted the question on sevenforums where various contributors made suggestions
Fresh Win 7 Installed OK but Not Working "Properly" - Windows 7 Help Forums

My notes then say
So I installed from the recommended ISO
then Installed:
1. kb3138612 (x86) - No problem. restarted
2. kb4474419-v3 (x86) - No problem installing. BUT the computer wont restart Wont even go into safe mode.

so I tried again installing
kb3138612 (x86) as before and restarted
kb4490628 (x86) because I read somewhere it is apparently needed
kb4474419-v3 (x86) - Now the install process says "not applicable to this machine"

it was around then that I discovered (from another website) that kb4474419 alters boot.exe which means the computer will not then reboot
So I reinstalled Win7, saved the original boot.exe, installed the kbs as above, then replaced boot.exe and the computer booted just fine.
but there was never any problem installing 4490628 only 4474419
so maybe 4474419 damaged something else?

But there were still problems so I came to SYSNATIVE because you guys seemed to have a more structured approach

I am quite happy to go back and start again with a clean sheet (fresh Win7 Reinstall) and they try to tackle the problem of no windows updates if you think that might make it easier?

Yes. Please do a fresh install of Win7 SP1, then report back.

OK but what happens next is known - see page 1 of the sevenforums posts referred to above.
So I do a clean install then what?
You want me to straight off do
sfc /scannow reports no integrity violations
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth reportss error 87 restpre health not recognised in this context
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image error 87 enure that comman line arguments are valid!!

or what?

it also leaves a bunch of drivers missing. Shall I run my 3rd part driver installer (It does not involve an install of any sort)?

dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth reportss error 87 restpre health not recognised in this context
This is normal. The option /RestoreHealth isn''t supported on Win7.
When the clean install is done you should have a working internet connection also, right ?
You may install missing drivers but do not install any Windows Updates.
We go from there.

OK I have restored from a backup taken after my last clean install
Windows updates reports no updates installed
There is an internet connection but websites report 'Your Connection is not secure' (this happened before)
The date and time is correct.
