[SOLVED] Win10 - refuses to update to 22H2

One extra datapoint: after i ran the standard update, the files in the panther folder were no long er accessible. I had to manually enable inheritance to read them.
Hi,

When you try to copy the COMPONENTS hive file from C:\Windows\System32\Config to your desktop, do you still get the message "File not found or no read permissions" as in post #22?

Please run the ComponentsScanner first.

ComponentsScanner and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click ComponentsScanner.exe and select "Run as administrator", click Yes on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt which appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once complete, a report will be saved to your desktop called ComponentsScanner.txt.
  • Post the logfile ComponentsScanner.txt as attachment into your next reply.

I get the message "can not run on windows inside build"

Hmm, is the Windows Insider Program still activated on this system, this because I've noticed in an previous log a sign of the Windows Insider slow ring.

I suppose it is. But of course there is nothing inside for years now.

Press the Win-key + I and open Updates & Security > Windows Insider Program and post a screenshot of it.

I'm still delayed. the system chose to try to install the update again this morning on it's own (which is why i am doing this, it just does this randomly) and goes down for a couple hours . Frustrating.

All I can tell you is that it is enrolled in the windows insider program under my microsoft account. I do not use the microsoft account to log in, instead I use only local ID. (but this asnt always the case).

I can unenroll it from insider program, since I cant upgrade to win11, however, I dont think it would change anything since it is on some odd build already.

Thoughts?

interesting datapoint...

I happened to be watching it live this time. It rebooted and came up with the black screen for applying changes, ran for about an hour. Then it rebooted and when it came back up it did the undoing changes. I have never seen this behavior before where it rebooted and then reverted.

The current build is 20H2 19042.1165 and this is not an insider build, but the latest LCU from August 2021. I would suggest to follow the instructions on the link below first, to try to disable the insider program.
Leave the Windows Insider Program

Let me know the result and post the latest setup and CBS logs.

ok, it finished. Sure looked like the update succeeded, but then on reboot it reverted.

attached are the logs.

I left the insider program, but leaving didnt do anything except unlink the account as far as I can tell. I'll go ahead and try a new update from the media creation disk

Well, I did what it saiud to leave, but when I go into windows update, it stiull says "this computer is set up to receive insider builds, link your acocunt to change options".

doesnt seem any way to leave :( (short of a fresh install)

Press the Win-key + I and open Updates & Security > Windows Insider Program and post a screenshot of it.

Please link your Windows Insider account and then choose slow ring (insider level) but don't attempt to install anything. Afterwards you should see the option Stop Insider Preview Builds.

Ok. It worked this time.

Started a new update from the media installer

Unfortunately, I am going to have to start rebuilding this for work tomorrow. I need to enable all the devices again and get it back to normal.

Not sure where we go from here. Is it hopeless?
