Dear SoftwareManiac,

After various cycles of update to make sure that everything that could get installed did, i am happy to report that 42 pending updates did install and 'only' 23 keep failing.
Seeing what the initial situation was, that is no small success :) Many thanks!
checkSur.log reports no error anymore.
Cheers,

Somehow though, and despite the fact that I had not selected it, this one installed itself at the same time (and successfully).
Also, strangely enough the Windows update history shows that it is the second time that it installs itself succesfuly:

Interestingly, the large majority are for Microsoft Office.
The 42 updates that did successfully install also were in large majority for Office.
I find it surprising that so many updates for Office would have accumulated over the last two years (from when the files corruption happened).
Would it be possible that some at least of these remaining updates which do not install were in fact superseed by others among the 42 which did install successfully, and therefore are not actually necessary anymore?

The Office updates that did install on the 21/10 thanks to your help were:

My understanding is that it is something like a browser plugin from MS, equivalent to Flash?
I don't use it as a developper but if I uninstall it is there not a risk that a few applications may not work anymore?

You are correct that Silverlight is Microsoft's equivalent to Adobe's flash. If a website needs Silverlight, it will prompt you to install it. So I suggest we uninstall it and then if you ever get to a site that needs it you may install it. The Silverlight updates will likely install successfully as well after this is done. If you are not comfortable with this, then uninstall it and then after it's uninstalled, download and re-install it.

As for your previous question, I apologize for not replying, I missed it.

Would it be possible that some at least of these remaining updates which do not install were in fact superseed by others among the 42 which did install successfully, and therefore are not actually necessary anymore?

This is possible however Windows Update is usually VERY good about the detection of which updates need installed. When updates haven't installed for a very long time there are so many potential install scenarios and it's impossible to account for them all. We'll take a look at one or more of the updates to see what the issue is.

As for what to do next, please pick just one of the updates, attempt the install and provide the CBS.log if it fails.

Dear SoftwareManiac,

Trying to uninstall Silverlight returned the following error message:

Windows installer

[h=1]This installation package could not be opened. Check that you have the authorization to access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.[/h]Sans titre.jpg

I could try to force uninstall with IObit Uninstaller for example but I am not sure that this is wise.
What next?

Dear SoftwareManiac,

So Silverlight is gone, but Skype is still in the Windows Update list. Some Google-fu showed that this is is because it is Skype for Business, which cannot be uninstalled without uninstalling the whole Office Suite.
Of course I guess that completely un-installing Office, then re-installing it and together with every related Windows updates could be a solution to all the remaining Windows Update problems (or not...) but I am rather loathe to pull that big a gun unless there is no other solution?

Cheers,

Dear SoftwareManiac,

I chose the oldest update package I could find:
Mise à jour pour Microsoft Outlook Social Connector 2013 (KB3054854) Édition 64 bits

Please find attached the CBS.log
Thank you,
Cheers

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Install one listed update as you normally would.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the update fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.
