[SOLVED] Window 7 Ultimate Can't Do Microsoft Updates. Help!

PeterJ,

KB4535102 failed again. Attached is CBS.txt.

Something I have been meaning to mention that may or may not be important: when I go to open the CBS.log sometimes it opens right away and sometimes I get access denied and have to right click to take ownership. Not sure why it varies from time to time or if it is significant.

To avoid that open an elevated commandprompt and paste following command into it. It will create a copy of the cbs.log to your desktop which you can provide on request.
Code:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CbsPersist_20210411184817.cab to your next reply.

PeterJ,

Posting here to bring this back to your attention. I have seen posts to others from you but not here, so I am concerned it has dropped off your radar.

Thanks,

Rod

I didn't lost track of this topic, just thinking of the next step as the logs shows no error but updates are failing.

Post the logfile C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log as attachment in your next reply.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next reply please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive and just provide the download link.

PeterJ,

Here is the WindowsUpdate.log. I was just concerned because I know you deal with a lot of cases and it seems it could be easy for one to slip between the cracks. BTW, I am very impressed with what you have done and with your Sysnative community. I have used some of my time to browse other cases and other forums and topics on your site. It is quite an amazing community. So many problems, so little time!

Thanks,

Rod

Thank you for the nice words.
Post a fresh screenshot of the Windows Update scan result.

Is Visual Studio 2008 installed ?

The program "Visual Studio 2008" isn't listed in your screenshot. The "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable..." items can be installed by other programs. That does not mean the program "Visual Studio 2008" is installed.

PeterJ,

So, if it is not installed, then why do I get the update option and how do I eliminate it from the list so that I won't get errors on automatic update when I turn it back on?

Rod

I don't know why you are getting the nearly 10 year old update. Maybe Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 was ones installed and some remnants caused WU to offer you this update.

PeterJ,

I am sure it was once installed. Early on I used it in my programming work. I'm sure if I really looked around I might find a disk in my archives. I don't use it now. I do more php and javascript for online applications these days. But the question remains, how to I get rid of this? Is this something that needs to be removed from RegEdit to get rid of it? Is that in your expertise or do I need to open another topic elsewhere in the forum.

Rod

There are some registry keys and values still present from "Visual Studio 2008 SP1" but I not sure if it is safe to remove them.
Does Windows Update report any problems ?

PeterJ,

The only problem when running updates appears to be a failure to install the visual studio update. Of course, this means if I turn on automatic updates I will get an install failure every time update runs. I imagine I could do a regedit backup, make changes and see what happens. If it is a problem, then I could restore the old regedit. What do you think?

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Check Windows Update again and report the result.

PeterJ,

Still shows one update available (Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 XML Editor (KB2251487)) and the attempt to install results in failure. Fixlog.txt is attached. BTW, I realized I exaggerated the problem of leaving KB2251487 in place because I can just hide the update, and then I won't see it during updates. Even so, I would prefer it be gone if possible. But I don't want you to waste your time doing it.

Thanks,

Rod

I would just hide that update instead of messing with the registry.
