[SOLVED] window update error 0x80070057

I have a disk that came with the PC. It is a single disk that says, "Intended for distribution with a refurbished PC" Includes service pack 1 32 bit windows 7 Pro.

Good. We won't use that yet but may need to.

Now when you reboot your computer and begin tapping F8 on the keyboard to bring up the Advanced Boot screen do you have a Repair Your Computer option? If so please select that. You will then be prompted to pick a keyboard layout and then open up the command prompt.

Then follow these instructions once at the command-prompt.

Revert Pending Changes
1. Type notepad into the command prompt and hit enter.
2. Click the File menu in notepad and choose Open. Click on Computer on the left hand side so that you see all the drive letters. You sill see Boot (X:) and likely others. Look for the drive letter that is associated to Local Disk.
3. Once you've identified the driver letter you may cancel out of this screen and close notepad.
4. Now type the following into the Command Prompt replacing C (shown in red) with the drive letter you identified in bullet#4. Note, there is a space after C:\ as well as before the last forward slash.
DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

5. If all goes well you will see the following as the last few lines. Please let me know if you don't.
Code:
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
The operation completed successfully.
6. Now you may close the command-prompt window and Restart your machine.

Let me know how it goes.

I see 3 choices system c: 167mb free of 199mb windows d: 112GB free of 148GB and boot x None say local disk. I think it is d but want to make sure.

I did as instructed and it said
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
The operation completed successfully.

But it still downloads update installs reboots and reverts changes.

Ahhh finally something to work with. I think the cleanup we did helped as I now see a driver error.

Perfect. Let's add the missing package manually.

Add Missing Package
1. Click the Start button and type cmd.exe in the search box.
2. Right-click on the cmd that comes up and select Run as administrator.
3. Once you are at the command prompt, copy/paste the following line and hit enter.
pnputil -a C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_wudfusbcciddriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18381_none_64324eae60327212\wudfusbcciddriver.inf

Let me know if it says successfully installed.

The following are just notes. You may ignore. The log file showed...
Code:
!!! sto: Failed to find driver update 'C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_wudfusbcciddriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18381_none_64324eae60327212\wudfusbcciddriver.inf' in Driver Store. Error = 0x00000490
<<< Section end 2015/05/28 15:31:29.094
<<< [Exit status: FAILURE(0x00000490)]

Sorry. Just noticed that there was an extra space in the command. You will need to do the following again.

Add Missing Package
1. Click the Start button and type cmd.exe in the search box.
2. Right-click on the cmd that comes up and select Run as administrator.
3. Once you are at the command prompt, copy/paste the following line and hit enter.
pnputil -a C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_wudfusbcciddriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18381_none_64324eae60327212\wudfusbcciddriver.inf
