Windows 10 Release - Discussion

I got the media creation tool since I was tired of waiting, so I'm well along the process now. It's checking for updates.

Put it on an ISO or USB instead, I read that's the fix... supposedly.

And of course...

I have audio and my sound card is detected just fine, but I can't get into either the Creative console launcher nor control panel, lol. Windows 10 drivers aren't due until October 2015... great.

Thanks Patrick, I started the download before I left for work. What I am a bit confused about is if this will still be a free version? Or will I need a product key?

It will be free for one year today.
After that you'll have to purchase Windows 10 if you didn't get it within the year.

The product key will be the one for your current, valid, Windows 7/8/8.1.

I did the upgrade, it took over an hour from Win 8.1, nice part is my cursor stays highlighted in message boxes now something I never could fix under 8.1...................

Ah right, I will try my windows 8.1 key tonight.

I knew it was free for the first year as long as you had a genuine 7,8.1 version of windows. But if you were go out and build a new computer and wanted to install windows 10, you would have to pay the ~$150-$199 for the license.

I wasn't sure if that would be the case here, if I would need a windows 10 key.

Man, this sucks.

Windows 10 forces driver updates for all devices and you can't turn it off. With that said, I can't install a specific version for my sound card, because it forces its own which doesn't let my audio control panel work. So I have no access to any EQ settings.

This is true but note you can also/still buy a new Windows 8.1 license for less then upgrade to W10 for free. More of a hassle but if on a budget, worth checking into.

The upgrade on my desktop computer failed. It got stuck on 26% for 2 hours. And the MediaCreationTool won't even launch on my laptop. So far I'm really, really not impressed with the upgrade process. I might end up creating a bootable USB and select the upgrade from there if it doesn't work, but it'll have to be tomorrow night since I don't have my 32GB USB with me.

The KB https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 settings for Windows 7 are available for Windows 10 (and Windows 8/8.1). Control Panel > Devices and Printers > right-click PC > select Device Installation Settings > Toggle "Never install driver software from Windows Update & check "Automatically get device app & info provided by device manufacturer.

Check that System Restore is on. It was off by default in each build until 10240.

It seems like it hangs for me at 26%. This is after the reboot, when you get on the black screen saying "Upgrade to Windows 10" and the circle with the % in it.

Woah, awesome. Thanks, Corrine!

Upgrade worked well on my laptop, rather hassle free and quick - it even downloaded the latest drivers before installing!

My tablet is still running the upgrade, I guess they solved the WIMBoot upgrade issue on space constrained devices (32GB SSDs) by allowing the use of additional external storage (SD/USB/etc) during the install process. Rather clever.

That might be my issue. I only have 15GB left of space on my hard drive after downloading the Windows 10 upgrade and launching it. Maybe it cannot expand properly.

On my laptop it used about 26GB for the install. I ran disk cleanup immediately after it completed, I don't intend to go back :p

Urg. Alright, I'll grab my 32GB USB tomorrow then or I'll see if I can uninstall programs. Which are most likely going to be like Visual Studio or SQL Server. Sigh.

Same here like Alex. "Something Happened".

Now trying the USB method. I will let you guys know how it goes after the upgrade (From 8.1 Embedded to Windows 10 Pro) . I think the issue would be regarding activation.

Just checked MSDN as well and the keys to each and every edition are available :D

Any idea, how big is the download (For the USB)?

I had an issue with the Nvidia driver, when I first booted into Windows it installed the generic one for my computer.
Then I installed the latest Nvidia driver from GeForce.co.uk which worked fine, until I got an error in the device manager about the driver, as well as a Windows update error from trying to install the generic driver again.
I don't need the generic driver... I have the best one installed. That is just stupid, it seems to be a common issue.
