[SOLVED] Windows 10 upgrade fails

Hi Peter,
Here are the latest logs.
As before, the "Turn Windows Features On or Off" window opened up blank but I left it open and ran the FRST registry search anyway.

Please redo step 1 in my previous post. It looks like the attached fix script was not used.

Hi Peter,
My apologies. I re-downloaded the SFCFix.zip file from your post #20 and saved it to my desktop. I then dragged it onto the SFCFix.exe program. The generated SFCFix.txt file is attached. Does this file look right?

Looking good now.

Export registry as hive
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, please upload to WeTransfer and just provide the downloadlink here.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.

  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x86)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log to your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Great. Restart the machine.
Check the Windows Feature dialog. Is it still empty or displayed normally ?

Hi Peter,
The Windows Features dialog box starts off as a greyed out box and says "please wait." Then after 58 seconds delay it fills in and displays normally.

Also, Windows Update fails with error code 80072EFE and checking for updates in Windows Defender fails with the message "The program can't check for definition updates. Error found: 0x80072efe. The connection with the server was terminated abnormally."

However, my internet connection seems stable and is functioning just fine.

Additionally, I cannot get Windows Process Activation service to start. The service is set to automatic start but doesn't actually start. Attempts to start it manually gives an "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

It is normal that the dialogbox is filled after a short time.
What security programs are installed, antivirus, antimalware, etc. ?

Step 1:
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Hi Peter,
In your post #32 you asked what security programs are installed. Previously I had Avast installed but now it is uninstalled per your suggestion to get Windows 10 to install. However, I still see numerous entries in Event Viewer relating to missing Avast files. Other than that all I have right now is Windows Defender that I can’t update and Windows Firewall.

However, I still see numerous entries in Event Viewer relating to missing Avast files.
Provide a few screenshots of those entries in Event Viewer.

Do you use the Windows component Internet Information Services (IIS) ?

FRST File Search
  1. Right-click on the file FRST.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Copy and paste loghttp.dll;iisreqs.dll into the Search box and click the Search Files button.
  3. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'Search.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also.
  4. Close Notepad and attach the file 'Search.txt' to your next reply.

Hi Peter,
Here are a few screen shoots of the event viewer showing the errors relating to Avast which has been uninstalled.
I do not use IIS. It was partially selected under Turn Windows Features On or Off (see screenshot). I unchecked IIS and now all sub-entries under IIS are also clear. Is this OK?
The requested Search.txt file is attached.

FRST Scan:
  1. Right-click to run FRST.exe as administrator.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Attach the log files FRST.txt and Addition.txt to your next reply.
