Windows 11 updates fail and re-install as well

Hmm, I don't get that same screen. Anyways about computer says I am on 23H2, and when I try windows installation app it says I am on latest win 11 try when new one comes out. SO either the 23H2 is reporting wrong or the build is reporting wrong. I think I am on 23H2 because I have that new AI helper thing icon. In any case no way would I do a clean install, I forgot all my passwords to install apps, games, utilities, ect. So either I am on current 11 or I will just wait to upgrade the usual way from windows updates. I just hope at that time next year I don't get failed updates like how this entire thing happened because sfc /scannow and windows upgrades always failed. SFC /scannow works now, so I assume it will upgrade from an insider build to a normal build next time without any issues?

You're running 23H2 but build (22635.2771) which is an insider version from the beta channel. So you have installed the latest beta build (including preview updates).

  • Windows 23H2 (22631.xxx) is the latest stable build.
  • Windows 23H2 (22635.xxx) is the latest beta (unstable) build.

To go back to 23H2 build (22631.xxx) you'll need to perform a clean install, or wait for the next coming "feature update" 24H2 which shall replace this build.

Please see my previous screenshot with the details and the explanation of Microsoft. See also this thread about insider versions.
(...) In any case no way would I do a clean install, I forgot all my passwords to install apps, games, utilities, ect.

I would suggest to use a good password manager, like KeePass - and to make frequent backups so you can easily revert the system to a previous state without issues.

It's not just passwords. Its installations of dozens of games and apps that I paid for and don't have the DRM or saved game states if I do a clean install. I always do an upgrade as it is the only way to keep everything. A clean install I did once and it took me about 72 hours straight to get MOST of my stuff back.

Hi,

Then you'll need to wait for the upcoming feature update (24Hx) next year. Which will replace the current preview build (beta channel). See my screenshot in post #40.

No problem, I can wait for the normal build. Just hope it will not fail to upgrade like this whole mess. Thanks for all the help. Hope I don't need you next year, LOL. Microsoft really needs to fix their upgrade process or have an option to upgrade and ignore any errors.

You're welcome. To avoid any issues I would suggest to create frequently backups (full system images). So you can easily revert the system to a previous state.

The Windows Update process is quite clear, on patch Tuesday you will receive the (stable) build of the latest cumulative patch! All the other preview (beta) releases may contain bugs which can cause issues. For systems you can't rebuild easily, I do not recommend preview (insider) builds - these builds are being rolled out as preview for testing purposes...

I do take regular Acronis images. But the problem was not the image, it was that windows upgrade tool and windows update would get to 100% and error out or do nothing. There was no way to upgrade, fix windows errrors, or anything, even from a dloaded latests ISO. So when the next stable release comes out, if it installs over my insider build I will be good to go. If it doesn't and does the same bullshit of not working or erroring out at 100% when done, then I am back to the same place. I just need to get out of this damn insider hell and on normal windows 11. I have been doing this for 30 years and never had an issue where I couldn't do an in place upgrade from one of the 3 methods mentioned above. Microsoft needs to fix this, it is ridiculous. And if it fails, at least say why it failed at 100%. No reason for insider builds not to be able to in place change to the latest normal build.
