[SOLVED] Windows 2012 Standard Will not update.. tried every trick in the book

If you would like to get on this server via VNC I can give you admin rights to this box to look around.

I was checking with a colleague about your server's components hive and there seem to be a large number of components keys missing.
Was this installation slimmed or customized in any way?

If not, the quickest route at this point may be an 'in place upgrade' aka repair install of Server 2012.

If you have the extra physical resources, I would try cloning the VM and then attempting a repair install to note the results and what installation time to expect before trying it on the live VM.
Make sure the NIC on the clone isn't connected before powering it on to avoid conflicting with the production VM.

Is this something you would be willing to try?

no noting special at all. in fact I have three VMs all from the same sys-prepped image so I don't know why this server would be acting this way and not any of the others. I'm not opposed to doing the clone with a repair install. First I want to go back to September backup and make a clone and try Windows updates. Then try your's suggestion.

If you have a backup I'd like to see the components hive from that backup. If it isn't missing the components keys, we may be able to use it as a base to repair.

Unfortunately the problem is still present in that backup.

Let me know if the repair install is successful or not on the test VM :)

just to give you an update. The VM restored from the backup back in September of last year would not do the updates. And the attempted repair install of the current server also failed. So I attempted an upgrade install to R2 and it completed, but is now processing over a GIG of windows updates. I won't know until that's done and all of the web services are working before we can call it a day or not.

I got the upgrade and all of the updates done, however I have a lot of issues with network connectivity and getting the Web services working. I've wasted nearly a full day on it and not any closer to the solution. Not that I am asking for help but I am close to giving up on the "Upgrade to R2" option. So what should I do at this point?

I'm glad the upgrade worked. That problem sounds like you might need to upgrade or reinstall your VM integration tools.

no it was more than that , Upgrading to R2 required a number of things to fix IIS and reinstalling DLL'S however it is running and updated. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that, but I appreciate all of the help and patience.

Glad you figured it out :thumbsup2:

Is the machine working as expected at this point?

Very good.

I'll mark the thread solved. Please do post back if you encounter any problems and I'll continue to assist you :smile9:
