[SOLVED] Windows 7-64 KB4487078 Won't install

Okay, as advertised, Microsoft Tech Support reinstalled Windows while saving my programs and documents. Guess what? No Help. After the new Windows reinstall completed, 12 Windows Updates were waiting to download and install. 11 of the 12 were installed. Guess which one didn't install? KB4487078. I've copied here the new CBS.zip link. CBS.zip: CBS.zip I still think this is a Microsoft coding error and they're too lazy or not smart enough to fix it. I still am not sure where to find this %TEMP%\vslogs.cab Where do I find it. Nothing comes up in Run or Search. I need the complete link or where it's located.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Are they suggesting anything else?

Is the Error Code still the same?

As for the logs, here are the detailed steps:

To obtain the installation logs download the Microsoft Visual Studio and .NET Framework Log Collection Tool.
  1. Click Download
  2. Select Collect.exe
  3. Select Next
  4. Select Save
  5. Open an Administrative Command Prompt Window
  6. Navigate to you Downloads Folder
  7. Find the tool “Collect”
  8. Right click on it and select “Run as Administrator”
  9. If a window comes up, click Yes to allow.
  10. Let the tool run
  11. tool will begin scanning and you will see text added inside of the Command Prompt Window
  12. When tool is finished do the following
  13. Open your File Explorer
  14. Enter %temp% into start
  15. Search for a file called vslogs

Nothing shows up when I type in Temp. When I type in %temp%\ in Run, a list of items shows up, none are vslogs. A 2-page incomplete list is attached. PrtScrn wouldn't copy the whole list. No vslogs in the list. When I type in vslogs in the Start menu, I get several items, all from 3 days ago, so I don't believe it will be helpful. In c\windows\logs\cbs, there is a cbs persist file that is new. I zipped and copied it here. a new batch of Windows Updates showed up today, 7 important, 2 optional. I selected the 7 important ones & successfully installed them. On its own, even though I did NOT select them, Windows decided to attempt to install the 2 optional updates, KB4487078 & KB4487256. Both of those attempts failed with the same Error Code 2. No Help or Change.

The 2 updates I did NOT select but Windows attempted to install anyway were both Optional, KB4487078 & KB4487256, the ones that started this whole mess in the first place and are still out there but always Fail to be installed. Do you want a list of the Important Updates that have been installed?

I just check Windows Update. There is 1 Important Update, the same problem Update from day one, KB4487078. I attempted to download and install it. As usual, it failed with Error Code 2. There are also 2 Optional Updates, both "Preview" updates, one new and one we've seen before, KB4487256. I did NOT attempt to install them. The list of all of these Updates are attached as a text. A new CBS.zip is also attached here as a OneDrive link after the failed update: CBS.zip

BTW, during the collect.exe instructions, which I followed to the letter, when I right clicked on the downloaded collect.exe and selected "Run As Administrator", a new Command Prompt window opened and the program ran in that new window and closed when finished. I reran collect.exe as instructed and still no vslogs file. There are similar files, but all are dated 20190221, 3 days ago.

I posted 2 replies before you said the link is dead. Did you get those 2 replies? If not, what can I do to resend them? They still show on my thread.

It appears that my thread is dead as in "The thrill is gone". As previously stated, Microsoft Technical Support reinstalled Windows on my machine. After the restart, I received 12 updates, 11 of which installed. Following that restart, I received 9 more updates, 7 installed and 2 did not. During both of these updates, the problem were the usual suspects that started this mess, KB4487078 & KB4487256. Both of these updates Failed with Error Code 2. I have Hidden those Updates. Today, I started receiving more updates, 2 to 3 at a time, identical to the 2 previous ones regarding "...Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2...". All of these updates Failed with Error Code 2. The attached text file is a complete list of the failed updates. The order in the list is the way I received them from Windows Update.

I believe Windows 7 includes 3.5. In any case, the registry indicates its 3.5.30729.5420.

Thanks. Let's try the following:

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

I may be wrong about the content of CBS.zip. It appears to have todays content as well.

Does the user name contain spaces?

Please do the following:

  1. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box. Right-click on cmd from the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes if the UAC prompt comes up.
  2. Copy/Paste the following in to the command-prompt window and hit enter.
wmic qfe list brief /format:texttablewsys > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\hotfix.txt"

3. This will create a file on your desktop named hotfix.txt. Please attach this to your next reply.
