[SOLVED] Windows 7-64 KB4487078 Won't install

My full name: Paul Lucia. Two User accounts are shown when the computer opens from Shutdown to Windows Start: Paul Lucia and Guest. Guest is never used however.

Try the following DISM command instead:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab"

If you look at the screenshot after running the Command Prompt dism...command that you sent, it says where to extract it from, basically the same place where the CBS.log is located. The dism file was copied and pasted on my desktop, then attached and Posted here on Sysnative. The cbs.zip file was copied and pasted to my desktop, then zipped & is attached.

Yes, but what I meant was have you checked that the path is indeed correct and that the files are present on the Desktop, because from the errors, I would say they are not.

The questions you're asking make no sense to me. What is specifically wrong with the items that I've attached & posted to Sysnative? Are they not opening or displaying? I've viewed what I've sent and there is a lot of information. What are you looking for? If the files aren't present on the Desktop, how could I have posted them? Keep in mind that this info is foreign to me. I'm not an IT Tech, like yourself.

Okay, let's try this a different way, so hopefully you will understand.

Since you're having issues with that one particular update, I wanted to see if installing every one of the updates contained within the package via DISM would manage to install some (because it usually can override the not applicable message) and even if not, I would get an error message to work with.

However, the only error message I have got thus far is the one saying that there were no packages found that require processing which means that you either:

a) did not follow my instructions correctly.
b) There was an additional subdir to extract from.

Once I modified the DISM command, I got a different error: The system cannot find the path specified: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/at...ows6-1_kb4483458_64_cab-response_3-pdf.44421/

That makes me believe that you may have extracted the files to the wrong location and that is why I am asking about the files.

If you have any specific questions, please let me know.

If I didn't follow your instructions, specify where I made the mistake or resend the instructions. If you expected me to attempt to retry to install all of the failed Windows Updates OR only the first one, then that's what you need to tell me to do. I followed your instructions explicitly, so if you think I didn't, then you need to resend them and DO NOT leave out any steps, including whether you want the dism.log and/or the cbs.log.

Okay, let's start by you taking a screenshot of the:

a) extracted zip file. (I have provided the link to the zip file previously.)
b) the contents of the folder that was extracted.

Nothing else.

Here is a previous instruction from you from last Tuesday on page 3 of this thread. If this isn't what you're talking about, then send the complete instruction that you ARE talking about. Leaving it up to me to FIND one of your previous posts leaves a lot to be desired. Like I said, DO NOT leave out any steps or leave me to peruse this thread to find the post you are talking about. It's ineffective & inefficient, since it leaves the reader to fumble about to attempt to FIND what you are even talking about. A screenshot of the Desktop with the Downloaded zip file and right above it, the Extracted cab file. Since there are multiple pages of the cab file, there's no way to take a screenshot of the entire cab file, unless I take multiple screenshots of each individual page of the cab file. I had to rezip the cab file and it still wouldn't upload here as a zip file. So, here it is as a Link from OneDrive:
Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab.zip
What now?

Thanks. Let's try the following:

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

  • Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Hi!

You have provided the screenshot I asked for. It was not needed for you to search for the link as the file I asked for was already on the Desktop. The zip file reference was here to make it easier for you to understand what I needed :)

In the screenshot you have provided, I can clearly see that both Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab folder and Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab.zip file are present on the Desktop, which is exactly what I wanted you to do.

Next, open the Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab folder and let me know what you see. Is there another folder within it called Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab or are there many folders starting with amd64/x86?

There are a bunch of amd64 folders and x86 folders as well as amd64 and x86 File Association Manager files but no amd64/86 files. But I am curious. If I sent you the OneDrive link so that you can open, unzip & view the cab file yourself, why are you asking me about the contents?

Because I have experienced it multiple times that sometimes the extraction results in an additional folder being created which consequently results in an error when attempting DISM unless you modify the command on user basis.

Let's try the following:

Please attempt to install this update: http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._41ba9b8a814351a318e78e4e1c02adc7e9fff67a.exe

Let me know what the result is and if it fails, provide the link to the whole CBS folder.

It can be found in C:\Windows\Logs. You need to copy it to the Desktop first and only then zip it due to permissions.

Sorry about the delay. After Microsoft Technical Support failed to resolve the issue, their last suggestion was a Custom Installation...Wipe the computer clean and install a new Windows 7-64. I declined and contacted Dell Support since this is a Dell XPS 8300. They have been working on the issue for the last 2 days with no solution. They gave up today. Going back, I sent you a bad OneDrive link to the file you had asked for. I'm attaching another OneDrive link that I believe is valid:
Windows6.1-KB4483458-x64.cab
In addition, I've made screenshots of each of the 9 pages of the contents of the OneDrive link in case it doesn't open for you, and they are attached here as a 9-page pdf file. Re your last post, I have attempted the update that you sent and the screenshot results are attached as a 2-page pdf file. And the cbs.zip file is also attached. As I mentioned in a previous post, Registry Release key value 461814 indicates I have 4.7.2. installed.

Okay, that screenshot confirmed my suspicions about the subdirectory. :) Can I get a CBS folder export after the KB4483451 failure and the logfile that is offered in the screenshot you attached). Please don't attach the present ones, but rather re-do the installation and have it fail.

Also, could you please give me the links to your threads with Dell and MS?

Thank you.

That's what I already sent you. The cbs.zip log file previously sent was after I ran the KB4483451 failure, but I'll do it again. After rerunning KB4483451, the responses and the log file is attached as a 3-page pdf. And the new cbs.zip log file is attached. There is no communication threads from Microsoft or Dell. They took over my PC and did whatever they wanted to do remotely. I did see them run a Dotnet Fix, FixDotNet20190305005755924 and a sfc /scannow in cmd. The latter came back with: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Many of the things Dell tried had already been attempted by Microsoft and/or me.
