The update is released as a Cumulative Update which includes quality improvements. The key changes include:
  • Security updates to Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Management, Windows Virtualization, Windows Peripherals, Windows Network Security and Containers, Windows Storage and Filesystems, and Windows Server.
  • We have fixed an issue where in certain cases, after Windows runs a scheduled task during a maintenance window, a PC may get into an unbootable state after installing Build 19041.21 (KB4535550).

The key changes in this Cumulative Update includes the following:
  • Addresses an issue that might block digital rights management (DRM) video playback in apps that depend on the Windows 8.0 or later PlayReady Store Framework for content protection.
  • Updates the copyright date for Windows 10, version 2004 to the year 2020.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the Notepad icon to appear on the Start menu after uninstalling the Feature-on-Demand (FOD) version of Notepad.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause some systems to stop responding at sign in because several background services are being hosted in the same service host process.
  • Addresses an issue with the Your Phone app that might cause the copying of large PC files (such as images) to certain phone models to time out.
  • Addresses an issue with cellular data for certain mobile carriers that might prevent connectivity on Microsoft Surface Pro X.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to pin the new Microsoft Edge icon to the taskbar after a user installs the new Microsoft Edge and creates a new user profile on the device.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents some users from signing out because the user session stops responding.

Note: Please make sure your device is set to “Full” before updating to Build 19577. You will not be able to take future flights if your diagnostic level is left at “Enhanced”. AAD/Domain-joined PCs set to “Enhanced” will be blocked from taking Build 15977. For more information, see this Answers post.

The Build includes changes to the Settings app and Group Policy settings that are part of the Settings app and Group Policy settings. The change in this Build is to Basic diagnostic data which is now known as Required diagnostic data and Full diagnostic data is now Optional diagnostic data. The Build also includes more new icons.

Fixes plus these general changes and improvements:
  • Based on feedback, when you have muted your volume, the volume will now not unmute when using the hardware keyboard volume keys until you raise the volume (or manually unmute).
  • We made a couple of improvements to Narrator and how it works with some of the controls in Windows:
    • Narrator now uses a more friendly string to describe the audio output in the Select playback device dropdown menu in the volume flyout.
    • Narrator now announces more information in the Add Bluetooth or other devices dialog in the Settings application when first opened.

Only one known issue at this time!

  • We fixed an issue that prevents older versions of certain apps from opening by directing users to install the latest version of these apps.
  • We have fixed an issue that fails to allocate resources during device initialization, which causes certain USB mass storage devices to stop working.
  • We have fixed an issue that prevents the mute button from working on certain devices with the Your Phone app.
  • We have fixed an issue that causes a fault in the input-output memory management unit (IOMMU) and a DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION (e6) error. This issue occurs after resuming from hibernate on systems that have Kernel Direct Memory Access (DMA) Protection and Dynamic Root of Trust Measurement (DRTM) enabled.
  • We have updated the Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) to increase the coverage for automatic cellular provisioning on devices with mobile broadband.

  • We fixed an issue that causes the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service (rpcss.exe) to close unexpectedly and the device stops working. Then you must restart the device.
  • We fixed an issue that causes the Device Enrollment Status Page (ESP) on managed devices to stop responding if a policy that requires a restart is installed on the device.
  • We fixed an issue that might prevent the rear camera flash from functioning as expected on devices that have a rear camera.
  • It also includes the latest security updates to the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Kernel, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Windows Management, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, Windows Core Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Update Stack, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

Build includes improvements to Settings and YourPhone.

Fixes:
  • We fixed an issue where Sticky Notes windows couldn’t be moved.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in language packs failing to install on the previous build. Anyone impacted by this may have noticed some parts of the UI weren’t displaying in your preferred language.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Task Manager showing an incorrect icon for Microsoft Edge Canary.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Snip & Sketch App launching in the background instead of foreground (on top of all windows) when the app was invoked via pen click.
  • We fixed an issue where using the arrow keys in the taskbar volume flyout was unexpectedly backwards in Arabic, inconsistent from the direction it went in other slider controls.
  • We’ve done some work to improve the performance when loading the Windows Update history page.

Please note that the May 2020 Update will only get pushed automatically to a subset of Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring at first. Everyone else can manually go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and manually check for updates and choose to install the May 2020 Update.

Build 19041.207 (KB4550936) includes all of the 20H1 features in addition to the quality improvements listed in the blog post and security updates.

In addition to a Cortana app update that will turn on Bing Answers and Assistant Conversations in the languages listed in the blog post, the update includes the following fixes:
  • We fixed an issue that was causing app icons in the taskbar to not display correctly, including defaulting to the .exe icon. This issue may have also caused some Insiders to have more reliability issues with explorer.exe.
  • We fixed an issue impacting Windows Forms applications where the ImmSetOpenStatus() API wasn’t changing the IME mode correctly when setting focus to text fields while using the new Japanese or Chinese IMEs.
  • We fixed an issue from recent builds for Insiders with multiple monitors, resulting in Visual Studio sometimes not responding to clicks.
  • We fixed an issue where the doskey / listsize command had no effect.
  • We fixed an issue where the doskey /reinstall command killed the commandline session rather than reloading doskey.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in Settings crashing when uninstalling a font.
  • We fixed an issue impacting some users that could result in Task Manager always showing 0 seconds for Last BIOS Time.
  • We’ve made some improvements to address an underlying issue that could result in a black screen for some users for a while after logging in. If you continue seeing this issue, please try pressing WIN+Shift+Ctrl+B and then log feedback in the Feedback Hub.
