Please navigate to C:\Windows\winsxs and copy any files with a similar name to pending.xml (e.g. pending.xml, pending.xml.bad, pending.xml_dfsadf78 etc.) to your folder on the Desktop [there may not be any, just if there are]. Then zip up this folder and attach it to your next post.

1. Right on the Start button -> click on Command prompt as Administrator
2. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
   REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
   REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS >1&& notepad 1
   
3. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.
   

Please also export the following registry keys, add them into a zip and attach to this post:

1. Right click on the Start button -> Click on Run -> type regedit
2. Once regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
   
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
   
   
3. Once selected, click File > Export....
4. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
5. Name this file Update (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive

• Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select
  
  Run as Administrator;

  • List Installed Programs;
  • List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;
    
    
• Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;

SoftwareDistribution - Rename
Follow the instructions below to rename the folders in SoftwareDistribution.

• On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
  
  Run as Administrator
• On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
• On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
• Enter the commands below one at the time (press Enter to send it);
  • net stop wuauserv
  • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
  • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
  • net start wuauserv

Once done, go in your Windows Update panel, and click on Check for update in the left-pane. If any are found, install them and restart your computer. If none are found, restart your computer and see if it still tries to install some.

nope, that didnt work. it doesnt even give me the option to check for updates

You don't have "Check for updates" in the Windows Update panel? Or you do have it but it returns an error code?

when i go to the little gear symbol, and click on "update and recovery" there is nothing that says "check for updates" when i click on "chose how updates get installed" i select "download only" then it starts a search for downloads. but then it stops and the "restart" button appears again. but nothing showed up saying i have files to download or install. i restart anyway and nothing happens.

Are you going in the Windows Update via Control Panel - System and Security - Windows Updates?

ive done that too. but it says that it cant check for updates because the pc needs to be restarted. so i click on the restart button and nothing happens during the restart
