Windows is running slow

Well I do have a question...isn't my graphic card onboard? do I still have to install it?

It seems that Realtek is already installed...so some of them are already done, isnt it?

TBH, this is the part im all screw up with computer : finding/installing drivers over internet...

Edit:
If my sister bought her laptop like this...I believe she got ripped off...it still seems slow...here's the errors logs...

I feel like im spamming my own thread...tsss

Just nevermind these logs, there was more than the windows update but when I rebooted, they were gone...

I might just need help with these drivers. Afterwhat we will see how it goes...

No worries, its fine. Its all useful information. :-)

If you need help, let me know. I've just packed up for tonight, but I'll check this thread again tomorrow.

Yes, you are right. It came with Norton and I removed it. The laptop is running fine in Safe mode but still have difficulties with big program (such Firefox, even with no internet.). I own a desktop computer and they’re almost equivalent in strenght. Mine is opening 2 times faster. By the time I press start button, the laptop takes up to 1:30min to reach the user log in interface…is that normal?

A have a few more questions :

1) Since my sister bought it in 2009, I believe she hasn’t cleaned it. I know nothing about laptop cleaning. Is there something to look out?

2) I went on « TousLesDrivers.com - Téléchargement gratuit de mises à jour PC (drivers, bios, firmwares, utilitaires) » (is that a good website to verify the drivers versions?) and it told me 7 of the drivers aren’t up to date. Which is kind of normal since the retailer built this computer in 2009. The file I attached is what drivers they are proposing, could you tell me if I should update them all?

3) Could I have a list of program I should be running/avoid to clean up the laptop monthly? (I was using Advanced System Care and I learned that it wasn’t a good program…so before I do anymore damage to computer, it would be usefull. Plus I installed MSE and will keep it because my sister McAfee license expire in 30 day (just so you know).

4) Before the system restore, I moved the pagefile and Search index to D :. Can I do it again or it would cause damage to windows? Because now I have two pagefile and search index, one in C & D. (And D : isn’t used for anything yet…)

5) I would like to send more logs to confirm the laptop is now running as he should, is that possible?

I'm concerned that it is still this slow after a factory restore...

Could you please run the following hardware test for me please since a failing hard drive can cause slowness. Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics - Sysnative Forums

In regards to physically cleaning the machine, I have some steps again from my friend Writhziden:

Writhziden said:

  1. Get a can of compressed air...
  2. Shut down and turn off your system...
  3. Unplug the system from any docking stations...
  4. Remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery...
  5. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to ensure all power is drained from the components. This closes the circuit and allows any remaining power to dissipate; it also clears the temporary memory of corruption and resets hardware/software connections. No permanent changes are made to the system doing this step...
  6. Use the can of compressed air to blow into every vent, crevice, keyboard key, USB port, VGA/monitor port, etc...
  7. Replace the battery and then plug in the AC Adapter...
  8. Replace the docking station...
  9. See how the system runs after doing all these steps...
WARNING: Never use a vacuum cleaner or hair drier to clean dust out of your system!!

Leave the index and pagefile where they are for now.

I don't recommend the use of auto updating programs, but the data you gave me seems OK. It's taken a while, but I've finally found the TOSHIBA download area for your laptop model - it was really well hidden!

Toshiba Canada - Support Center

Before you download any drivers, check to see if your version of Windows is 32 or 64 bit! The drivers listed at the link above are all for Vista x64. If you have Vista x86 (32bit) you must not use those drivers!

To check:

Start --> Right click Computer --> Properties. It will say System Type: xxxxxx where xxxxx is 64 or 32 bit

Install drivers in the following order:

Network drivers.
Audio Driver.
Display Card (Graphics Card) Driver.
Chipset Drivers
USB Drivers.

Note: You shouldn't need any of the toshiba utilities such as Toshiba Disc Creator, they're unnecessary

Once complete, tell me. I have some more things to check!

Regards,
Stephen

Hey Eric,

Could you confirm that you ran the long SeaTools test please? If so, and it passed, that's a good sign the HDD is fine.

Please download CrystalDiskInfo from here: Software - Crystal Dew World (Not the Shizuku edition) and take a screenshot and upload it to your next post.

Then, open Device Manager (Open Device Manager) and take a screenshot please. Upload it to your next post.

Hi Stephen,

Yes, it was the long SeaTools. Here's the picture if you need more things, let me know.

Both of those are showing no problems, so that's good.

Please download AutoRuns from here: http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe. Run it, wait for it to gather all of it's data, then click File -> Save to save the output as a .arn file.

Zip it and upload to your next post.

Stephen

Thanks. I'm not currently on my computer, so can't look at it now. I'll take a look later in the day for you. :-)

Hey Eric,

I've just been looking at your autoruns file.

Basically, it shows what programs are loading at startup and allows you to disable them. This can help to speed the computer up. Your file is not looking too bad, there's nothing really to cause concern.

If you like, you can load AutoRuns yourself, look under the Logon tab, and uncheck anything you don't want running when you start your PC. If you've ever used the msconfig utility, it's basically a more powerful version of that. If you do uncheck something, it's not deleted so you can check it again later.

One recommendation is to uninstall the Toshiba utilities that came with the computer, most, if not all of them, are not needed for the PC to work. Another would be to disable the Windows Sidebar.

How is the system performing now? Is it still really slow? If it is still slow, is it just as slow in safe mode?

Remember, Vista is not the fastest OS ever, in fact it is quite slow. Not as bad as some people say, but it's definitely slower than Windows 7.

If you want to see how fast your PC does boot, I have attached a small VBS script that will reboot your computer and time how long it takes to restart. Download it and double click it to run it. Show me the time that gives if you do run it. Please note, I did not write this script (but I can't remember who did!)

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I already removed the unwanted programs with msconfig and I don't see anymore that would have to be done.
I had windows sidebars removed from the beginning.

My computer took 176 seconds to restart...I guess the problem is most likely windows vista...

Edit: Safe mode is still slow on start, when I try to open program, they're still taking around 5-15 seconds.
After a few minutes after the computer is open, because everything is totally open or idk, it take no time to open folders and such.

Eric

Honestly, I think the issue probably is Vista. I don't like to blame Vista normally, but I think this may be the case.

The Pentium chip is definitely not the fastest processor out there, far from it. I know my old Vista machine with a Core2Duo was very slow until I did a clean install on it. Even then, it's not the fastest thing.

Do you have the original disks that came with the computer? If so, what disks do you have? If you are comfortable, I would possibly recommend a full clean install, rather than just a factory restore. This will give you the cleanest possible install.

If you're interested, a tutorial on how to do this can be found here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-windows-windows-7-windows-vista.html The tutorial does show Windows 7 screenshots, but the process is exactly the same

I have done quite a few Vista clean installs, it's not quite as scary as it may seem.

This is purely up to you, it's just an idea. It may or may not help, but it will give you the lightest and cleanest install possible.

If you do decide to, and you need assistance, I'll be more than happy to guide you through it.

Regards,
Stephen

Before I came and ran scans inside this laptop, I am 90% sure that he was booting faster. So yes, I will format.
I already have my datas copied and I want my sister to have the faster computer possible.

I will come back after all these install. I'll wait 5 mins if you want to add something before I start.

Ok, if you're happy to, go ahead. The tutorial will help you if you need it.

Any issues, reply to this thread, I'm not going out again this evening. :)
Stephen

There is something wrong...I put the Windows Vista CD inside. (It's writen 32 bits on it.)
I always used 32 bits system...so do I have to update to 64 bits online or? (the system is a 64 bits....)
Because right now, it doesnt seems to recognize my product key...

I ran a SCF /scannow (i was wondering if the problem was still there)...and the same problem from my other thread remains...is that normal?

I'm not quite sure.... The architecture (32 or 64bit) is determined by the disk, you can't change it.

I'm having other computer issues of my own tonight, apologies if I don't get back to you.

Stephen

Well my sister bought 2 laptop and received 2 disk of windows vista (32 bits)...which is weird since she got a 64 bits installed...

I attached my SFC files to this answer. If someone if able to fix them...that might be the key of my problem.
