Download and run SetupDiag from Microsoft
  • Download
    60e45c659164d-SetupDiag.png
    SetupDiag to your desktop.
  • Right-click on SetupDiag.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • When completed the following files are created: "Logs.zip, SetupDiag.exe.config and SetupDiagResults.log"
  • Attach SetupDiagResults.log and Logs.zip to your next reply.

Hello, Gary.

I ran SetupDiag as admin but only these 2 files came out. No zip file appeared.

Edit: what i mean are SetupDiag.exe.config and an empty txt file. i can't attach them both because the files turn out to be unreadable here

OK, no problem.

In that case, can you find and attach the following files in your next reply ...

C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log

C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

Hello.

I can't find those anywhere. When i copy those paths to file explorer, it can't find them.

Please do the following, and then see if you can find them ...

  • Click Search
  • Type Control Panel
  • Click on the Control Panel icon
  • Click on Appearance and Personalisation
  • In the File Explorer Options section, click on Show hidden files and folders
    • Check ... Show hidden files folders and drives
    • Uncheck ... Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • You will receive a prompt asking whether you want to do this, answer Yes
    • Click OK

Now try looking for those files again.

If you still can't find them, reverse the actions you've just performed, to restore Windows Explorer to how it was, and then let me know.

I tried it and the files still wouldn't show. There was no WINDOW.BT in my C drive.

In that case, please can you see if you have any of the following logs ...

C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setupact.log

C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setuperr.log

C:\WINDOWS\INF\setupapi.dev.log

... if you have, please attach them to your next reply

... if not, please let me know

Okay, I found them but can't attach them. I had no permission to open the files, it said.

Edit: Nevermind. I just copied them to desktop.

Sorry for the long delay.

Your latest logs didn't really reveal anything, so I've been going over all your previous logs to see whether I'd missed anything.

Can you please do the following ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...
  • Please try updating again, and if unsuccessful ...
    • Please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log ... to your next reply.
  • If the file is too large, upload it to a file sharing service, and post me the link.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Hello again, Gary.

It's okay about the delay. I can't thank you enough for staying this far with my problem.

The operation completed successfully.

But, when I tried the updates again, another one of the cumulative updates failed.
Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 21H1 x64 (KB5013624) - Download error 0x80070002

The other one (KB5013942) is being installed. I'll wait and see if it'll work this time. I'll get back after restarting the computer.

Both updates failed to install.

Here's my new CBS log.

OK, looking it over now. Could take a while. Back ASAP.

Hello, Gary.

I'm panicking right now because somehow my D: drive is now gone. What do I do?

Components Scanner just looks at your Components hive, whose file is located at ... C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components

It is an area of the Registry concerned solely with updating Windows, and nothing we have done should have affected your D:\drive.

Try rebooting your computer, and see whether you are now able to see your D:\ drive.

OK, thanks for letting me know.

Still looking over your latest logs. There's a few things I've found that I'm going to need to consult about, so I don't expect I'll be getting back to you too quickly.

Okay, Gary.

Btw, have any idea what might be causing this?

It says "Update" but doesn't look right. I just disabled it just in case.

No, it's not something I recognise, but then it's a fairly generic name, so could apply to anything.

Please do the following for me ...

  • Download FRST64 to your Desktop.

  • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
  • FRST will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press the Scan button.
    • When finished scanning 2 logs will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    • Please attach them to your next reply.
