Windows Update Error code 490 - Can't install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 64 bit

The corrupt registry key is still there! I say we delete it manually. Please follow the steps below exactly. If you have any questions, please ask.

1. Click on the Start
Start%20Orb.jpg
button and click on Control Panel
2. Click on the Programs group.
3. Click the link Turn Windows features on or off
4. Leave that screen open while we perform the next steps. Basically this loaded your components hive for us.
5. Click the Start button again and type regedit and then click on regedit that appears in the results list. Answer Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
6. The Registry Editor will now be open. Please click the arrow to expand the keys shown below. Eventually you will see the corrupt key.

Capture1.JPG

7. Once you have clicked on the corrupt key so it is highlighted, right-click your mouse on this corrupt item and select Delete. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. Please answer Yes.
8. Now close the registry editor.
9. You can now cancel out of the Turn Windows features on or off window.
10. Now let's try the SP1 install again. If it fails please provide an updated CBS log.

Thank you.

So basically I wasn't able to delete the corrupt key - an error popped up. After a few programs installed etc. it still didn't work. I rebooted the PC, tried it again and now while deleting the key the whole COMPONENTS file disappeared. Any ideas?

If you rebooted, the COMPONENTS key will likely not be there. Doing the following steps will re-mount the components hive.

1. Click on the Start
Start%20Orb.jpg
button and click on Control Panel
2. Click on the Programs group.
3. Click the link Turn Windows features on or off

If you do get an error, please let me know exactly what the error message is. Thanks.

While deleting the file I get "Cannot delete ㉦㘵愡摭㐶潟㕫〳田⸵灰彤㐹愸㐱㠵戴㜹挰㈻. Error while deleting key". I tried running regedit as admin, deleting it in safe mode, taking ownership of the file (it's impossible, while trying to do so it says that the security settings are either unavailable or unable to be viewed), then i tried taking ownership over the whole amd64 folder and it says that some keys were not taken under my ownership, meaning that particular key I suppose. I also tried various programs, none of them worked.

OK, thanks for the info. I've removed the key for you so let's do it this way.

Step#1 - Replace Components hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and rename the COMPONENTS file to COMPONENTS.BAD. Note: If the system doesn't allow you to, reboot and then try again. It should work at this point.
2. Please download COMPONENTS.zip to your desktop.
3. Right-click on the downloaded file and select Extract All...
4. Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" checkbox is checked and then click the Extract button.
5. You will now see the COMPONENTS file. Right-click on this file and select Copy.
6. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and then Paste in this file.

Step#2 - Verify Corrupted Key is gone
Verify that the corrupted key below is gone.
11845d1430269071-windows-update-error-code-490-cant-install-service-pack-1-windows-7-64-bit-capture1-jpg

7. Now close the registry editor.
8. You can now cancel out of the Turn Windows features on or off window.

Step#3 - Reinstall SP1
Only attempt this step if you verified that the corrupt key is gone!

Now let's try the SP1 install again. If it fails please provide an updated CBS log.

Just when I thought it's gonna work, another error popped up. This time during the installation itself. ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712). I'm attaching the CBS log.

Hello, I apologize for not replying for such a long time, I was during my finals and didn't have any time to apply the fixes. The installation progressed further but I'm still getting ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712).

In Post#27 I had instructions for you to rename the existing COMPONENTS hive to COMPONENTS.BAD2 and to download/extract one that I provided and to put in C:\Windows\System32\Config. I don't see COMPONENTS.BAD2 so I was wondering if this step was done?

Please let me know. Thanks.

Yes it was, I just kind of messed it up by renaming the text file instead of the actual components file and I replaced it not realising what I did. Hopefully that doesn't cause too much trouble.

Thanks for the verification. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Go ahead and attempt the SP1 install.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the SP1 install fails but not before. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
11908d1430506241-windows-updates-fail-repeatedly-stop-jpg

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log. You will likely need to send via SendSpace because of the size.

I'd like to try one more thing and if it doesn't work I'll get my colleagues involved to see if they have any ideas.

Please perform a Clean Boot of your machine following the instructions here. Make sure you follow the instructions for Avast that are mentioned as well.

While you are in a Clean Boot state, please try installing the Service Pack again. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks.

A few more questions as well.
1. Is your Windows 7 a retail boxed version or an OEM version (came pre-installed on the machine)?
2. Is this a work machine?
3. If a work machine, is it activated using a MAK key?
4. Is this an English or Polish version?

Thank you.

Getting ERROR_INVALID_DATA(0x8007000d). I don't know if this information will be useful but I've been getting BSOD's quite often for a long time now. I reinstalled my Windows and it didn't help so it might be hardware related but I thought this may be relevant.

Can you answer these questions as well?

1. I think it's OEM as I don't have and never had a disk.
2. No, it's my home PC.
4. Well the text is in Polish.

Yes, this is definitely relevant. All of these signs point to hardware being the issue. Let's take a look at the Blue Screen dumps.

Step#1 - BSOD Log
1. Please download the 64-bit version of Bluescreenview from here and save it to your desktop.
2. Right-click on the downloaded file (bluescreenview-x64.zip) and select Extract All. Click the Extract button and a folder will open with the contents that were extracted.
3. Right-click on BlueScreenView.exe and select Run as administrator. If prompted to Allow, please answer yes.
4. Once the program opens and finishes scanning, click on the Edit menu and choose Select All.
5. Then click on the file menu...Save selected Items...and save it to your desktop named BSOD.txt.
6. Open the BSOD.txt file in notepad (you can simply double-click on the file from the desktop to do this) and copy/paste the contents of this in your next reply.
