[SOLVED] Windows Update Fails 80080005

Done.

No error number, but after about 1 minute it returns back to the "check for updates" status (as if it hadn't checked for updates yet).

Tried it several times and it responded the same each time.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
MY

Let's repeat the exact process and let me know any errors/issues that come up.

Open Windows Update
click on Change Settings
select 'Never check for updates' in the dropdown - click OK
Exit Windows Update
now go back to Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Install Updates Automatically'
Click OK
now try manually checking for updates.

Thanks. Let's gather some info.

Step#1 - Retrieve System Information
1. Download Speccy to your desktop. The setup file will be named spsetup126.exe or something similar.
2. Double-click on this file and install it. Note: Please ensure that you uncheck any foistware that may be presented during the install (i.e. Chrome Browser install).
3. When the program opens it will retrieve some information regarding your system.
4. Once it's done, select the File menu and choose Publish snapshot. Answer Yes to the confirmation message.
5. On the next screen that comes up, choose the Copy to Clipboard button and paste this link in your next reply.

Here you go Brian:

Edit: Removed Link as it contains personal info

Thanks for the info. The next step we need to try is for you to completely uninstall Norton Internet Security / Norton Personal Firewall from Add/Remove programs. Just make sure you have any registration information/keys so that we can get it re-installed when we are all done.

Please let me know when it's gone. Thanks.

Should we delete the speccy link above (lots of info there).
Agreed and done.

Now that they are uninstalled, please go to Windows Update and let me know if you can see how many updates are available to install.

Good, thanks.

It checks for updates, but after about 1 or 2 minutes returns back to the "Check for Updates" screen as if it never checked for updates.

Let's run the following program again but with only the following options.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Extract.JPG

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

04 - Register System Files
05 - Repair WMI
06 - Repair Windows Firewall
10 - Remove Policies Set By Infection
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates

11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

That error normally means there was a glitch in the connection. I would probably close Windows Updates and then re-open it and try again. Is your internet connection stable?

Yes, once it a while it acts up but generally it's stable. Tried a few more times, it seems to go back and forth between 80080005 and 80072EFE.

Let's look at some logs.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Here you go.

Please delete attachment after you have downloaded -- thanks!

Edit: Attachment removed

Thanks. I suppose it probably wouldn't hurt to delete the previous attachments as well when convenient.

OK, I might know what's going on here. Please remove the following two programs from your machine.

AVG 2013
Samsung Update

Then reboot back into a Clean Boot state and try going to Windows Updates. Let me know if it works this time.

Both are removed.

Tried a few times and got 8024402C, 80080005, then 8024402C a few more times.
