Windows update failure 800736B5 when trying to install KB3042058

My questions are inline with your options below:

At this point we have three options that I can think of.

1. You hide the update from Windows Update. When you are ready to update to Windows 10, it should resolve the issue on its own.

I can't tell what this patch is supposed to fix, so I can't tell how much of a risk this option would be. I won't likely be able to do Win 10 until Q2 next year.

2. If you have a Windows 7 x64 with SP1 DVD you can do a repair install which will likely fix the issue. No programs or data would be lost.

If I do this with the win7 DVD I have for another machine, will it change/mess up my registration/product key? If so, can I fix that after the fact?

3. You can create a physical to virtual conversion of your machine and send it over to me via FTP (I would provide instructions). Then I can figure out how to resolve using methods that aren't really safe to do on a live system. Once I figure it out I could provide you the resolution.

Let's answer the above two, before I decide on this one.

Let me know if you wish to do any of the options above.

No it will not. If for some reason it does, yes it can be fixed afterwards. To be safe I would ensure you have the product key of your machine that you will be fixing. You can use this keyfinder here if you wish. You can follow the instructions here for a repair install but please ask if you have any questions.

People that are having this problem, do you have unusual bootloader configurations? I've always had this update fail in the past and just for the first time watched it successfully install. Only thing different is there was no dualboot or loader setup (I use Chameleon bootloader to boot windows usually). The two seem unrelated, but in my case is the only thing different

I don't have any unusual bootloader configuration and observed this failure. In my case as well as in campbell's case (according to the log files he/she published) the reason was in the wrong version of wcp.dll that didn't support operationHint attribute in the update's XML files. As soon as I addressed this problem everything started working. In your case the reason could be different.

For those who are interested in the solution of this problem from not approved helper, follow my thread at MS technet: https://social.technet.microsoft.co...-operationhint-attribute-in-manifest-file-why
I can verify that the solution detailed at this link works. I work for a team that has seen this exact issue many times, and has, until now, been unable to resolve it. This solution worked the very first time I tried it. What it boils down to is an incorrect servicing stack version in the registry.

Thank you for validating my solution. It's funny that here I was shut up and even my messages deleted, because I am not an “approved” helper. People are funny. Sometimes they choose confrontation instead of collaboration.

I'll be closing this thread since the OP looks long gone, and it's going a bit off-topic.

This being said, if the OP wishes for this thread to be opened once more to continue receiving assistance, he's free to PM any Moderator and request it.

Thank you.
