Please do the following. No need to try the install yet.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
4. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.


Step#2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
    Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

It doesn't seem that we're making progress here, the log looks similar to the previous one, as the values cannot be deleted.

What I observed is that looking at the first entries of the fixlist.txt (concerning Package_88_for_KB2871389) the first three lines look identical. Have the string values been cut by the cbs log? In the Registry Editor the addressed values look the following:

Yup, correct you are. Shoot. Let's do the following.

FRST Registry Search
 1. Point your mouse to the lower left of your screen to bring up the Start Screen icon and Right-Click your Start screen and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.

5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste KB2871389 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.

8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. You can close the notepad window. The file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.
9. Please zip up and attach this file to your next reply.

Check for Windows Updates. If KB2992611 still shows up as an update that is needed, please attempt to install it. If it fails, please provide me your CBS.log.

KB2992611 still showed up and - well, this time it worked, thanks for your support so far!
I go on trying to install the next pending update and provide the CBS log if it fails.
