Okay,

I ran it, and below is the wetransfer link with all 3 corresponding files, of which only the cbs log shows that same stinking components hive unloading error, but checksur log shows zero errors.

What's going on here??? As you saw, chkdsk fixed the volume bitmap, gsmart showed no issues, & I know you fixed all of the component files; so this machine is reading as clean in just about every other aspect, but still problems-What did your analysis show?

You are still missing a few files related to powershell, but these issues are very strange. and most definitely shouldn't be happening. The very first odd thing was the number of the corrupt files 139. That is A LOT of files. + Check Disk revealed errors. I don't think fixing these powershell items is going to make a difference really.

Well please don't give up, if there is anything else you can think of short of undoing ie11, let me know because I'm telling you, all was fine until the ie11 install, I had no issues with ie9 except some visual debugging features wouldn't work without ie11.

I'll have to check again in the morning my time when I have public access to plugin my laptop. I forgot to mention I ran adwcleaner & it found one Trojan that it killed, but I had done that before I rebooted & ran the checksur as per your request. Thanks, I'll get back to the forum tommorow, San Diego, CA time.

Hi,

The more I thought of this, the more I suspected a virus; I chose to run malwarebytes and it found wdf.exe riskware. Once it was quaratined, I was able to open ie11 and also a xml file. I fixed the gpo by installing the KB 3101155-64 update, no more parsing errors. Looks like the only remaining issues are the blank add and remove features window & the powershell files.

I forgot:

1. The Registry components hive keeps vanishing on me, have to reload it which only last for a couple reboots.

2. I've tried to set the Windows Modules Installer Service to "Automatic" several times, even in the registry to see if it fixes the Add and Remove features issue , which is one of 3 suggesteed pieces of advice posted online for a possible solution, but it reverts back to "Manual" every time, and has the "can't find the path specified" error in the Events log.

The components thing's normal. Don't tinker with the registry because you can cause more damage than good. WMI is also normal.

Okay, I'll deal with the Add and Remove until I get the Powershell fixes; but just why does components vanish like that?

COMPONENTS hive is loaded only when needed and it is a very sensitive area.

Retrieve Components Hive
 1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link here.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.




SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hi,

I just rebooted & as I figured, still no luck with the "Turn Windows Features on or off" (OptionalFeatures.exe), which I mis-stated yesterday was "Add and Remove Programs", which is actually fine.

I tried almost all of the suggested online fixes except the dreaded Repair-Install,so I hope it won't have to come to that after all of the fixes you've spent time on so far; I read earlier today, as to where it took someone 2 consecutive Repair-Installs to fix their blank window problem....

Remove Update Manually
 1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt

wusa /uninstall /KB:958830

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
