[SOLVED] Black screen hangs for a few minutes after initial Windows 7 welcome screen

Start Windows in safe mode:
  • Click Start.
  • Typ MSCONFIG in the search field and click OK.
  • Open the tab Boot.
  • Put a checkmark at Safe boot and select the option Minimal.
(To start Windows in Normal mode again, remove this checkmark.)
  • Click OK, next click Restart.
Windows will now start in Safe mode. This may take a bit longer as usual.
Does the black screen also appears when starting Windows in Safe Mode ?

Hi Peter,
Followed your instructions and the PC started in safe mode at least it said safe mode above the search box , the machine started up showed all the programs scrolling over in white on a black screen and then opened the desktop up straight away displaying all the normal icon's, slightly larger and the mouse didn't function, also desktop tool bar background colours seemed lighter in shade/colour.

Went to msconfigexc and unticked safe boot for a normal boot, left button in minimal box , then restarted, I'm not sure if the pc is back in normal mode as the background colours of the toolbars and your website lighter in shade although the mouse works again

Should I have ticked the apply button in the msconfig box when trying to revert back to a normal boot?

Thank you

That sounds like safe mode.

Yes I think so. When done you may get a message that it needs to reboot to complete.

Hi Peter
MSCONFIG BOX

Gen tab shows selective start up
Ticked Load system services & Load start up items
Unticked Use original boot config

Boot Tab
All boxes unticked
Timeout 30 seconds

Services Tab
All boxes ticked

Start up Items
All ticked

Restarted with push f4

All screen colours back to normal

Hanging black screen after initial blue welcome screen remains the same'

Thank you

Kind Regards

Open in MSCONFIG the tab "Services".
At the bottom, put a checkmark at "Hide all Microsoft services".
Click Disable all to disable all none Microsoft services.

Restart the machine.
Does the black screen remains the same ?

Hi Peter,

Did as you instructed, the laptop started up as normal ,tried three times, no hanging black screen!!!

Did get a pop up on each restart stating that Kaspersky password manager is unable to run , just cleared this pop up.
Also kept getting a pop up message asking if I want to subscribe to CC cleaner pro, although I uninstalled cc cleaner yesterday

Do Leave I the settings in MSCONFIG as now?

What do I do about the Kasperskey password manager pop up in rectangle?

Kaspersky total security shows antivirus shows protection is live and running no mwention of password manger not running despite initial pop up on restarts?

Thank you

Kind Regards

Hi,
I seems that cc cleaner was still installed, so I ran Revo uninstaller although when it went through the process it asked if I wanted to remove something the the registry associated with CC cleaner, I wasn't sure what to do so I left it, nw it seems the CCcleaner is uninstalled as it doesnt show on the Revo scan, but I think there is still a leftover in the registry, should it be removed and if so how do I remove it ?

Thank you

Good. Re-enable all services related to Kaspersky and check the startup (blank screen) issue.
If still no hanging blank screen, re-enable the disabled services one at a time so determine which one cause the delay.

For the CCleaner issue, perform a new scan with FRST and provide the log files "FRST.txt" and "Addition.txt".

Hi Peter,

The start up of my laptop is back to what it was when I first installed the Samsung 480gb SSD around 5 years ago!
No hanging black screen problem after the initial blue welcome screen!
I uninstalled the Kaspersky password manager and reinstalled it again and now no pop up!
So it seems that your computer software knowledge and your determined perseverance has solved the my black screen issue and probobly a few more!
Well done and thank you!

Please find scans reports as requested

Kind Regards

Good find and fix.
I don't see any remnants of CCleaner in the 2 logs. Do you experience any problems regarding CCleaner ?

Hi Peter,

Did several start ups, all very fast , it seems you have sorted the hanging black screen problem!

I noticed some registry keys/components still remain in regedit from previously removed anti virus program's, should I delete them or just ignore them?

AVG
Avast
Avira
Glarysoft
Panda Security

Also in Firefox under Settings at the top of the screen it shows
"Your browser is being managed by your organisation"

I'm not a member or employee of any organisation so I wondered what this message refers to?

If you would like me to raise these two issues under separate headings on the forum then I can do so?

Once again thank you for sorting the black screen!

Kind Regards

Almost every program leaves remnants in the registry which mostly do not harm the system or cause problems.
The 2 log files do not show the removed antivirus programs, only 1 item refers to Avira but that might be from Avira Phantom VPN instead of Avira antivirus.
You may run Avira Registry Cleaner if you like. How to use it can be read here: How do I perform a manual reinstallation of my Avira product?
(See item 1. Clean your system, and 2. Remove registry entries with "Avira Registry Cleaner")

Also in Firefox under Settings at the top of the screen it shows
"Your browser is being managed by your organisation"
This can be caused by an antivirus program.
Lets have a look at that.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi Peter,
I can download the fix to the desktop bur when I right click on the download the box that opens up doesn't show the "Open as administrator " option, I did get in a bit of a mess with the number of txt logs on the desktop so I deleted them and started again so the fault may be mine?

Thank you

Hi Peter,
I am sorry but for some reason I had forgotten to use the FRST.exe, which I have now done!

"Your browser is being managed by your organisation" is now gone!

So if this comes back again in the future do I use this program or use regedit to remove the key on your fix in the registry?

Thank you for your help!

Kind Regards

Tony

I strongly advise not to use FRST scripts without supervision. As mentioned with each script, it is made for that particular machine only.

Are there remaining issues or can we mark this thread as solved ?

Hi Peter,

I shall certainly take your advice and not use FRST scripts without supervision.

At present there are no issues and my machine is running so much better through your efforts!

Please mark the thread as solved.

Thank you for your help and patience.

Kind Regards
