[SOLVED] BSOD on 2-year-old Dell Studio 1558 Laptop

That's good news. :smile9:

Please proceed with the steps in my previous post. I added some steps for the Windows corruption step if you continue to see corruption after a fourth run.

CHKDSK completed after about 3.5 hours. Log from Event Viewer below. Doesn't look like a smoking gun to me. Please let me know if you think CHKDSK should be run again.
I am running MEMTEST86+ next.

No need to run disk check again with both boxes checked this time. Run it with Automatically fix file system errors; should only take a few minutes that way, and that will determine whether it is clean. I have seen disk check pass and there still be problems found with the Seagate diagnostics, so I still recommend running those.

MEMTEST86+ v4.20 run overnight: 14 passes, 0 errors.

CHKDSK run again with only Automatically Fix File System Errors checked: no errors found, log below.

Continuing with SeaTools, then SFC.

Disk check looks great. Nice work!

Let us know how the diagnostics and system file check go.

Here is a summary of what we have done since opening this thread

  1. De-installed McAffee Anti-Virus
  2. De-installed McAffee Agent
  3. Updated wireless driver
  4. Updated Bluetooth driver
  5. Updated Bluetooth firmware
  6. Did Clean Boot. Deselected "Load Startup Items". Deselected All Services (save Microsoft). Still got BSOD.
  7. Ran Malwarebytes Full Scan. No problems found.
  8. Ran CHKDSK for about 3.5 hours. Found some errors posted earlier.
  9. Re-ran CHKDSK with “Automatically fix file system errors” – no errors found.
  10. Boot Disk version of MEMTEST86+ v4.20 created and run overnight: 14 passes, 0 errors.
  11. SeaTools: ran Short DST, Identify, SMART self-test, Short Generic, Long Generic, Fix All Fast. All clean. See log “5VJ6J5ED.log” in SkyDrive. URL = http://sdrv.ms/NQK62O
  12. Ran Extended version of Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. It ran from 8am to 11pm. “Running test pass: 5. No problems detected yet.”
  13. Ran SFC /SCANNOW three times. “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” See “CBS_3.log” in SkyDrive.
  14. BSOD has occurred 20 times since first zip file of mini dumps was uploaded. See “Dell_Studio_minidump_#2.zip” for 20 most recent minidumps.

What is your advice?

Lets keep this BSOD here as there is much more talent here than on Answers. I will mark your thread on Answers as "Answered/solved" there.

  • Updated wireless drive

Hi -

Thanks for Speccy!

What is the current version of Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 AGN driver? Are you sure it was updated or could it perhaps be the same driver you already had installed...?

9 of the 70 BSODs listed NETw5s64.sys as the probable cause; the last BSOD that listed Intel wifi was the 9th most recent dump w/timestamp = Tue Aug 21 03:58:48.286 2012 (GMT-4) . The Intel driver found in all 70 dumps is the same -
Code:
NETw5s64.sys Tue Sep 15 15:40:39 2009 (4AAFEDB7)
http://www.sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=NETw5s64.sys

The version number = A00 13.0, which I believe to be Intel version 13.0.0.107. This is the only one listed at Dell Support -

Intel 6200 AGN at Dell - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...=7N0CJ&FileId=2960749039&urlProductCode=False

Drivers for Dell Studio 1558 - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/studio-1558

Are you at college and required to run Bradford Networks Client Security Agent? It has crashed too, but I can't say it is involved in any of the BSODs. WERCON shows APPHANGs and APPCRASHes.

Lastly, but possibly most important - any idea why your system is running hot, specifically the CPU (61C)?

Here is screenshot of Speccy - my HP laptop is on the right side -
08-28-2012 09-51-42.png

Do you have the laptop elevated? Get a can of compressed air and blow out the vents. Be careful not to spray directly into the vents full blast as the fan can be damaged.

Double-check the Speccy temps with Speedfan - http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

My system - SpeedFan -
SpeedFan_08-28-2012.png

Overheating can cause hardware to fail. WERCON (Windows Error Reporting) lists over 200 APPCRASHes with an exception error = 0xc0000005 = memory access violation. This does not automatically implicate RAM.

When you ran memtest86+, did you run 1 stick at a time & alternate the slots or did you run both sticks together? The former is how memtest86+ needs to run.

Regards. . .

Thank you for continued help.
1. I think the driver installed for Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 AGN is the latest on the Dell website. I think given the Dell links you provide (and are essentially the ones I used to seek new driver to download), the most recent version of the driver at Dell is 13.0, yet the sysnative.com/drivers link which redirects to an Intel drivers page shows version 15.1.1 to be the latest. We will attempt to deinstall version 13.0 and download and install version 15.1.1 using the directions you gave earlier.

2. Laptop is not currently at college and given its current, six-month-plus unreliability, will not be returning to college. We can remove/unintstall "Bradford Networks Client Security Agent". Didn't even know it was on there.

3. In response to prior questions, no we are not over-clocking. Wouldn't know how to do that. Also, we have not opened up the case.

4. Don't know why it's running hot. Wasn't aware that it was running hot. Will attempt to open the case and clean the vents. Will run Speedfan.

5. When we ran MEMTEST86+, we made no adjustments/removal of memory sticks. As I mentioned, we haven't opened up the case. Should we try removing memory sticks while re-running MEMTEST86+, or should we run Driver Verifier first?

Hi -

I would recommend cleaning the system first to get the temps down. Running Driver Verifier is prudent; however, it is likely that it will heat up the system even more.

Glad to hear Bradford Networks will be removed.

When you attemp to update the Intel wifi using drivers from Intel...
1. Make sure you download the Dell Driver, just in case
2. Create a system restore point
3. Uninstall Intell wifi manager - Windows 7 needs no help managing wifi connections
- Check Control Panel/ Uninstall; if need be, use Revo Free
- Install the Intel wifi driver ONLY - the one ending with Ds64.exe -

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...-N+6200&DownloadType=Software+Applicationseng

If after the above is taken care of & BSODs persist, run memtest86+ one stick at a time, alternate the slots.

I didn't find any evidence of over-clocking in the dumps.

Please let us know how things go.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Sir,

Re: "3. Uninstall Intell wifi manager - Windows 7 needs no help managing wifi connections"

Control Panel > Programs and Features ... lists "Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software" Should I uninstall taht?

Appreciatively.

From Speedfan it appears the Fan is not running. Should I see changes over time?

Yes. Be sure to follow instructions in my prior post.

The fan may just not be registering.

Can you hear the fan or feel air coming from the exhaust vents?

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Thank you for the continued advice.
1. We deinstalled Bradford Networks software
2. Yes, I hear the fan running and feel air exiting at the vents.
3. I removed part of the cover and blew compressed air through the vents. They weren't very dusty.
4. Don't know why SpeedFan doesn't show fan operating. This is consistent; maybe it's looking for a separate Graphics card fan and not the system fan.
5. Have had a couple BSDs and machine freezes when running SpeedFan.
6. We Uninstalled "Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software"
7. From Intel Download Center, we Downloaded the Driver-only "Wireless_15.1.1_Ds64.exe"
8. We Uninstalled, checking Delete driver software for this device the previous WiFi driver, version 13.0
9. We Installed Driver Version 15.1.1, dated 3/12/2012 for Intel Centrino Advanced 6200 AGN

We will run some programs, play video, and otherwise use the computer to see if it crashes.

Appreciatively....

P.S. SpeedFan and Speccy show the same system temps, within a few degrees. Snapshot below. CPU and GPU get up to 64 degrees or so depending on the load and ambient temps (cooler here today so not running as hot).

BSOD occurred again, once since Intel Centrino WiFi driver updated (update occurred Sunday, 09-Sep-2012 at 4pm). Minidumps from five most recent BSODs, including this most recent one can be found in "Dell_Studio_minidump_#3.zip" in SkyDrive. URL = http://sdrv.ms/NQK62O

Recommendations:

Graphics Card Driver Crashes:
A portion of the crashes were DirectX/graphics card related. DirectX comes installed with Windows, so this may indicate Windows corruption. It may also be that you have corrupted drivers or a graphics card hardware problem.

  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run a system file check to check Windows for corruption:
    1. Click Start Menu
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Accessories
    4. Right click Command Prompt
    5. Click Run as administrator
    6. Type
      Code:
      sfc /scannow
      and press Enter
    7. Once it is complete, make note of the message. If it says Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and post back
    8. If the message does not say Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and do steps 1-6 again.
    9. You may need to do steps 1-6 up to three times with a restart in between each run to resolve all corrupted files.
    10. If you still have corrupted files after a fourth run, post back here with the following:
      • Click Start Menu
      • Click Computer
      • Open your C: drive
      • Open Windows
      • Open Logs
      • Open CBS
      • Copy and paste CBS.log or CBS (it may not have the log extension) to a location you will remember.
      • Compress (zip) the CBS file and attach the .zip file to your next post.

Follow the steps for Diagnosing basic problems with DirectX. To re-install your display card drivers as outlined in the DirectX link, use the following steps.

  1. Download the drivers you want for your display card(s)
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Uninstall a program
  5. For AMD:
    • Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager if it is listed (this should remove all AMD graphics software and drivers)
    • If AMD Catalyst Install Manager is not listed, use the following method to uninstall the graphics drivers (this applies to onboard graphics, as well):
      1. Click Start Menu
      2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
      3. Click Manage
      4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
      5. Expand Display adapters
      6. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
        • Right click the adapter
        • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
        • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
      Alternatively:
      1. Login as an adminstrative user
      2. Click Start Menu
      3. Click Control Panel
      4. Click Hardware and Sound
      5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
      6. Expand Display adapters
  6. Restart your computer after uninstalling drivers for all display cards
  7. Install the driver you selected for the display cards once Windows starts

Remember to try multiple versions of the graphics drivers, download them fresh, and install the freshly downloaded drivers.

If You Have Further Crashes:
If you have further crashes after doing the steps above, please follow the blue screen posting instructions again to provide us with more information about your current setup on your system. Due to the time in between since the last time that information was provided, there are many factors that have changed and may be contributing to the problem or may be ruled out as contributing to the problem.

Also, please run Driver Verifier with the following steps:
a. Backup your system and user files
b. Create a system restore point
c. If you do not have a Windows 7 DVD, Create a system repair disc
d. In Windows 7:
  • Click the Start Menu
  • Type verifier in Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
  • Right click verifier and click Run as administrator
  • Put a tick in Create custom settings (for code developers) and click next
  • Put a tick in Select individual settings from a full list and click next
  • Set up the individual settings as in the image and click next
    VerifierIndividualSettings.JPG
  • Put a tick in Select driver names from a list
  • Put a tick next to all non-Microsoft drivers.
  • Click Finish.
  • Restart your computer.

If Windows cannot start in normal mode with driver verifier running, start in safe mode. If it cannot start in safe mode or normal mode, restore the system restore point using Advanced Boot Options to choose Repair Your Computer. In the Windows 7 System Recovery Options, choose System Restore.

If you are unable to start Windows with all drivers being verified or if the blue screen crashes fail to create .dmp files, run them in groups of 5 or 10 until you find a group that causes blue screen crashes and stores the blue screen .dmp files.
The idea with Verifier is to cause the system to crash, so do the things you normally do that cause crashes. After you have a few crashes, upload the crash reports for us to take a look and try to find patterns. Verifier may need to be enabled for up to 36 hours for a crash to occur.

When you are ready to disable Verifier: Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
verifier /reset
-> Restart your computer.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Please see my post on 08-27-2012, 04:39 AM. We already addressed overclocking and performed sfc /scannow.
Which is most important to do: separate memory stick tests or your suggestions for 1) directx/display drivers, 2) driver verifier, 3) 3rd party drivers.
