[SOLVED] BSOD on 2-year-old Dell Studio 1558 Laptop

Thank you for the continued advice.
As before we

1. From Intel Download Center, we Downloaded the Driver-only "Wireless_15.1.1_Ds64.exe"
2. We Uninstalled, checking Delete driver software for this device the previous WiFi driver, version 13.0
3. We Installed Driver Version 15.1.1, dated 3/12/2012 for Intel Centrino Advanced 6200 AGN

We'll run diagnostic and memory tests. Any other direction you can provide is appreciated.

Another BSOD this morning. See "100912-28267-01.zip" in the SkyDrive directory. That's two since Driver Verifier was enabled.

Hi -

Turn Verifier off. Contact Dell Support.

The dumps were VERIFIER_ENABLED, but named no 3rd party drivers.

This indicates Hardware Failure.

J.C., I am grateful to you for your help, advice, and presence. I was on the phone with Dell for about an hour and a half today. They agreed to have me send the laptop back to them again for repair. We'll see if they can fix it this time.

We opened this thread on Sysnative Forums on August 18th. This was after repeated calls this year, especially this summer, to Dell by myself and my college-aged son, whose laptop this was till it proved woefully unreliable.

We'll update this thread with occured when the laptop is serviced and returned by Dell.

In my mind, it is even a greater tragedy that this plagued system was intended for use by a college student as he has enough to contend with and doesn't need added stress of something beyond his control. 4 here - 11,14,18,22 - so I know what it's like.

No ego trip here, but you have been helped by some of the best BSOD minds found on the Internet today. I am speaking of all that participated in this thread.

Good luck with Dell and please do keep us posted. Thank you.

Kind Regards. . .

John

Dell replaced the RAM and returned the laptop. FYI, the laptop has been sent to Dell twice. First they replaced HD and reinstalled OS and drivers. BSODs persisted. We ran the laptop with driver verifier enabled, BSODs persisted, and jcgriff2 said, "The dumps were VERIFIER_ENABLED, but named no 3rd party drivers. This indicates Hardware Failure."

Now, the laptop with new RAM is back home. The first BSOD occurred. Minidump is called: 101712-12604-01.zip and is found here: http://sdrv.ms/NQK62O

Would you kindly please review and tell us if this is more of the same? If so, I will re-contact Dell and insist they replace the laptop, unless you suggest otherwise.

With our continued gratitude....

Recommendations:
Disable Verifier: Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
Code:
verifier /reset
-> Restart your computer.

Your System Uptime may indicate that this was a false positive due to having Verifier enabled. Verifier should only be enabled with our instructions if you are having problems with the system running normally. There is no reason to enable Verifier if the system is running fine with it disabled.

Driver Verifier was disabled when JCGriff2 told us to do so on 09-Oct-2012. We then 'negotiated' with Dell to have the laptop sent back for repair. They replace the RAM. We got it back this week. Only turned it on and started it running two days ago. I do not think Driver Verifier is currently enabled, but will double-check.

Verifier was definitely enabled during that crash. Let us know how things go once you disable it.

Recommendations:
One of your crashes directly blames hardware. The other crash BugCheck code can indicate a hardware related problem. Probably a good idea to contact Dell again.

Dell will most likely want you to do a full Windows 7 PC Restore with their factory image prior to replacing the unit. You could try it before calling to see if it resolves the crashes. Make sure to heed the advice to backup your important files prior to starting the restore.

This is why it's best to try and push Dell in a respectful manner to try and replace the system and not try to replace parts. When they're stumped they just pick a part and replace it then send it back and hope for the best. It is not in your best interest to have to play this game when you can just take care of it all with a complete replacement. Just make sure before you send it for such that you backup your data to an external drive or something, because it all will be gone when you get the replacement system back.

When Dell first got it back, they replaced the HD and installed Win 7 with their drivers, so yet another reinstall was not requested. I spent an hour on the phone with them today and I respectfully but firmly insisted they replace it. When asked to run diagnostic tests, I politely but firmly declined, saying the laptop had been under the care of Dell technicians twice in the past month and they would have done that better and more thoroughly than I could (whether they in fact did so is questionable, yet beside the point -- I'm not doing it now).

The customer service rep is to call me back within two days to learn if the request for system replacement has been approved.

Thank you all for your continued advice and support.

Dell has agreed to replace the laptop with a newer refurbished model with slightly better specs. This thread can be closed: as JCGriff2 said early on, the BSODs seemed hardware related and Dell's agreement to replace the system indicates agreement with that assessment. Thank you all very much for your advice, insight, support, and direction. I hope I don't have to enter an issue on this forum for the replacement system or any other systems we have. But if I do, I know I'll get superb advice.

Gratefully,
