[SOLVED] Cannot install any updates for Windows 7 x64 bit

I switched out the chips and started the program. It is giving me an error about every 4 to 5 seconds so I would guess that tells us the chip is bad. I don't see any reason to continue running the test unless you do. I now have several questions.

1. Is that why we are having issues updating Windows?

2. Where would you suggest I purchase a chip? It's not easy for me to get out so the internet works for me.

3. How do I figure out what to order?

Thanks.

Yes, the chip is bad. I agree that it's not necessary to do any more testing.

1. Most likely this is the cause. I can't say for sure until we replace it but either way it's an issue that needs fixed and is likely causing other issues on your machine.
2. The best place to purchase your RAM is Crucial. If you go to that website you can have it detect what you need. I believe what you need to purchase is this.
3. See previous bullet.

I am beginning to think someone doesn't want me to update Windows. (lol)

I went to the website. Had some issues figuring out the correct one so I started a "chat". Very helpful and found the right one. Problem is we figured out I was not seeing the same thing on the website that he was seeing and which I should be seeing. Couldn't find my shopping cart, etc. He said try a different browser, which I did. Also a different computer. I had the same thing happen wit one other website several month back.

My question to you is I need a 2GB DDR2 800 SODIMM. Now below that wording is CT1154583. Is that part of the description? Meaning I can't use any other one that matches everything except the CT number? I have found a different website with 2GB DDR2 800 SODIMM chips, but the CT number is different. If it has to match, I'll check tomorrow to see if the chat guy can take my order. He suggested I call them, but due to surgery, I am unable to speak, so I have to pay someone to come to the house to make calls for me.

I appreciate your help.

I figured out that the CT number is Crucial's part number. I can't purchase using their chat function. I have found other chips that are 2GB DDR2 SODIMM. Would they work or is there something else I need to check to make sure it is compatible? Otherwise I'll just pay the guy to come over and make the call for me. Thanks.

I've ordered a chip. It will take 5 to 7 days to get here. Once I have it, I'll check it out and then get back to you once I've tested it. Thanks for all of your help. Let's hope this will solve my issue.

I installed the new chip and I'm testing it now. In about another hour it should made the 8 passes. Once I put it all back together, what will be my next step? Should I try one update or what? Thanks for all of your help.

If all passes then yes I would try one update first to see how it goes. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't work as we may have to do some other things first if the RAM is good.

I assume that both good memory chips are now in your machine and with both of them in, your machine passes the memory test. If this is the case then please start with the following.

Let's first reset Windows Update using the FixIt at the following link. If you are presented with an Aggressive option, please choose that option.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

Once this is complete, reboot your machine into a Clean Boot state and then perform the step below.

Step#1 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

I ran the program and received an error message. I still have the error message displayed as I didn't want to proceed without talking to you first.

Ran into another, but different, error message. After getting it, I started the system in clean boot to see if it made any difference, but it didn't.

Is this where we need the installation disks for Windows 7? I am running Home on the old laptop and Professional on the new laptop. When I first bought the new laptop I created a set of recovery disks before doing anything to the new laptop. Would thy be of any help? When I contacted Acer about installation disks they told me that they only send out recovery disks but I could create my own when I first purchase a laptop. That seems to tell me that a recovery disk and a installation disk are the same. If they are, can I use thoses disks for repair purposes? My concern is the difference between the Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Home.

I was able to obtain Windows 7 media and did a repair install. Updating fine now. Thanks for the help.
