[SOLVED] Cannot install any updates for Windows 7 x64 bit

I started the install 5 hours ago and it is still trying to do the install. Should I let it continue? I will continue until I hear anything different from you.

It's installing now. I'll let you know when it is finished. One thing I noticed when I did the clean boot was when I checked "Hide all Microsoft Services" there was nothing left that was checked and the "disable all" was grayed out. I don't know if that means anything, but I wanted to let you know. Thanks.

After running the download for several hours a message came up and said it was already installed on my computer.

Please do the following.

Retrieve System Information
1. Download Speccy to your desktop. The setup file will be named spsetup126.exe or something similar.
2. Double-click on this file and install it. Note: Please ensure that you uncheck any foistware that may be presented during the install (i.e. Chrome Browser install).
3. When the program opens it will retrieve some information regarding your system.
4. Once it's done, select the File menu and choose Publish snapshot. Answer Yes to the confirmation message.
5. On the next screen that comes up, choose the Copy to Clipboard button and paste this link in your next reply.

Let's test your RAM and then we'll check your Hard Drive out.

Test RAM With Memtest86+

Please ensure you allow 8 passes of the program!

Download Memtest86+ here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Which should I download?

You can either download the pre-compiled .ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).

Do note that some older generation motherboards do not support USB-based booting, therefore your only option is CD (or Floppy if you really wanted to).

How Memtest works (you don't need to read, it's only for those interested in the specifics):

Memtest uses algorithms (specifically two), namely moving inversion & what is deemed Modulo-X. Essentially, the first algorithm fills the memory with a pattern. Starting at the low address, it checks to see if the pattern was changed (it should not have been), writes the patterns complement, increments the address, and repeats. Starting at the highest address (as opposed to the lowest), it follows the same checklist.

The reason for the second algorithm is due to a few limitations, with the first being that not all adjacent cells are being tested for interaction due to modern chips being 4 to 16 bits wide regarding data storage. With that said, patterns are used to go ahead and ensure that all adjacent cells have at least been written with all possible one and zero combinations.

The second is that caching, buffering and out of order execution will interfere with the moving inversions algorithm. However, the second algorithm used is not affected by this. For starting offsets of 0-20, the algorithm will write every 20th location with a pattern, write all other locations with the patterns complement, repeat the previous one (or more) times, and then check every 20th location for the previously mentioned pattern.

Now that you know how Memtest actually works, it's important to know that the tests it goes through all mean something different. It goes from Test 0 through Test 12, many of which use either one or the other algorithm discussed above, among many other things.

Any other questions, they can most likely be answered by reading this great guide here:

Test RAM With Memtest86+

I let it run for about 20 minutes. I don't know how to interpret the results. What do you need for me to tell you about what is showing on the screen?

If I understand the area that is proving the information, it says: Pass: 11 Errors: 5376. It is still running.

Yikes. You can stop it now. 5,376 errors is not good. This tells me you have bad RAM. How are you running this program? Using a USB drive? CD?

USB drive. I couldn't get my CD burning program to recognize my drive when I tried to burn the CD. So I downloaded the correct program for a USB drive,. Then I had to change the order of the BIOS to boot from the USB.

OK, good. Assuming you booted to the USB drive and let it run (didn't hit F2 or any other function on the keyboard) it appears bad RAM may be your issue here. To narrow this down you will want to shut down your computer and remove one of the RAM chips. Then boot up your machine and perform these same steps. Do 8 passes and see if there are any errors. If all is good with the RAM chip, then shut down again and remove the good chip and replace with the other one and test again. Let's see if one of your RAM chips is bad.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I pulled one chip and ran the program and it showed no errors. I won't be able to run the other one until later today.

Does it make any difference in which slot i run the remaining chip?

There's always a chance the slot could be bad as well so I would recommend that you test the 2nd chip in the same slot that you tested the first one in. If it checks out OK then we should test a RAM chip in the other slot.

Thanks.
