Corrupted Files. Many broken windows features. Win 8.1 x64

Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the DISM tool and provide a log.
  1. Right-click the Start button and click Command prompt(Administrator).
  2. If you get a popup about UserAccountControl, allow the program to run.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

    Code:
    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\CBS\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
    Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.

Here is the file. I can use a file sharing service if you prefer but this seemed easier. I hate OneDrive and I've been trying to delete it off my sidebar for an hour. Homegroup too lol

Capture Process Monitor Trace
  1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
  2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
  3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

  4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
  5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Which update is it you would like me to perform? The software update through control panel works fine with no issues yet still have the same issues. (No start menu, search tool broken," PC settings" wont open)

Then do following.

The files are 570MB when compressed and zipped, filedropper is limited to 300Mb for free users, are you fine with me uploading it to mega.nz ?

No problem. Provide the zipped cbs.log as well.

I'm unable to download the file. The download starts but stops randomly with error "Out of memory".
Please try WeTransfer

Gotcha. I tried to set it up again just a little bit ago but the PMC saved only 5KB so i will try it again in a few hours when I get off work and post the link here for you

Its asking me for an email to send it to, it wont let me upload it and receive a link.Do you have an email you want me to send it to? You can message me it if you want. But I dont want to send it to myself because then I have to upload it and download it and that'll be a GB of data & i'm on limited data plan.

Please read this Creating a shareable link
Click the blue button with the 3 dots, select link instead of email and click the blue button Transfer.
When the upload is completed copy and paste the download link into your next reply.

Script Reset Windows Update Agent

Currently giving this a shot. If it does not work I will probably just order an external hard drive tonight for the files I want to keep, buy a key and download Win 10 onto a flash drive. And then just reinstall the OS since it seems this is more trouble than its worth at this point for everyone involved.

Hi!

@ShadySituations

Sorry to interrupt this, I just wanted to chime in before you actually go ahead and buy anything and say that the upgrade is free of charge and that you need not purchase anything. You can just download the Media Creation Tool and it will attempt to upgrade.

As there have been a plethora of issues, I'd suggest the following before the upgrade:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

@PeterJ My apologies for interrupting your flow. :-)

Thanks for the info! I will go this route if we cant get it cleared up in a couple more days. Dont realize how annoying it is to not have a search function until you dont have it. Have to do a "Run" command just to open MS Paint. Everything is fine on my other user accounts though so idk why mine is toasted

Yeah no worries thanks anyways for trying to help, Peter.

& How would you like me to run it? Like this or through a chkdsk command? (Not sure if they're the same )
