Corrupted Files. Many broken windows features. Win 8.1 x64

My userprofile on windows? I never made another one. I've used this one since I bought the computer. I only even ever logged onto the "Administrator" and guest accounts to check if the start menu worked, I have them disabled most the time

I tried several times throughout the day and I'm unable to make a new user account regardless of which user profile i try it from. On my normal profile, "PC settings" doesnt even attempt to open, regardless of where I try to open it from. (Start menu, control panel user account)

When I try it from the premade administrator account, this happens.

Yeah I think that is my only shot of getting it working correctly again. I'll order an external tonight to move my files over to. Should have it tomorrow with prime delivery if i'm lucky. Would just use a cloud service but my ISP limits me to 600GB/month  I've already got a 16GB Corsair USB I can use for the OS. Just have 500GB of mostly unimportant music/movies i'd rather not lose

I probably have some deep seated malware in my system that nothing is picking up on, a rootkit perhaps. I had gotten phished a couple months back via an email from "Apple" that didnt get filtered into Spam, and I didnt look closely enough at the header to notice it was and i not an L in the APPLE. MBAM had started giving me notices almost immediately and although it had said it was removed, I think it's missing something

No, this is definitely not malware.

And I meant to try upgrade which would keep your data intact. Not a fresh install (I'd opt for that if nothing works).

Ohh okay. I had no reason to think it was other than the incident a couple months back, but these weird windows issues didnt start until a couple days before I made this thread, And willing to try just about anything at this point, pretty frustrating not having a Start menu but most of all a broken search function

Let's try:

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
  2. Accept the License Agreement
  3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.

No luck unfortunately, fell asleep during install and had this error when i woke up

I've never heard of it. & Unfortunately late last night something happened while I was playing League and my game minimized to a notification about some rollback and I "lost" over 400GB of media. I say lost because it still shows its taking space on my disc but I cannot find it anywhere. There is not windows.old folder, its not in my videos/music/replays folder where it disappeared from. My system restore points were all deleted. No clue why, it keeps saying my recycle bin is corrupt but i check properties it shows 400GB of stuff in there so I keep clicking "No dont delete". easeUS showed a lot of the files but it's $60 so ill pass on that, gonna try recuva to see if it can recover them before i just pull this hdd out and buy a new or a new computer

This all goes in line with my theory about the HDD, the files were corrupt because of your HDD and moved to recycle bin, which has also been corrupt because of the HDD. I'd advise you invest in an SSD. You need not invest into a new computer unless it is really old like Sandy/Ivy Bridge.

Let me know if Recuva helps.

Everything seems to be "okay" for the most part. Recuva has found most (if not all) my files that were corrupted and theyre all in "Excellent" condition. It will take awhile to sory through 400GB of media but its better than losing it. Most of it was just saved in different, weird locations. For some reason or another it did do a rollback yesterday @ 930PM ( i found the file when i was poking around earlier)

There were all spread out in like 4 different hidden recycle bins. So I put all the hidden recycle bins in 1 folder and ran recuva on it and the files ended up under :c\users\cameron\desktop\help\S-1-5-*bunchofrandomnumbers*-*bunchofrandomnumbers*-bunchofrandomnumbers*-1001\$RCMNL0N\Movies\Blu-Ray. The "Help" folder was the one i made and put the recycle bins, idk what all the folders in between Help - Movies are.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
