Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

I double checked, no inst directory in that folder.

I did. I copied the manifest file in the SFCFix.txt to Software Distribution but there's no inst directory in that folder (screenshot of directory below):

This is very important info. You have been doing it wrong.

Please create the inst folder and paste the manifest within it.

Afterwards, please retry roles with ProcMon.

Arg, I had a feeling. Ok, I tried the correct way - I created a folder inst in the update folder in SWD/Downloads and it errored out so logs below. But I notice the folder was missing the inst folder and manifest file after trying. I have the feeling it was deleted but not sure if it was after the install failed or not. Is that expected? I'm not sure it ran with the manifest file there.

Please download the attached fix and extract the folder to the following directory: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ffa5d0c7902ef50b9376165d55df04e2\inst.

If any of these do not exist, please create them manually.

Works much better when I do it the right way. The Turkish language pack installed. :rofl12: Bravo, sir.

Uninstall Turkish language pack and try role installation?

You got it. Retried the role install w/procmon (logs below).

My friend...success!!!

I was able to install two features and it works great. I think you've done it!

Thanks so much for hanging in there with this one...I know it was an epic saga but we emerged victorious!!

So to sum it up, the multi-language version of Windows Server 2016 Essential appears to sometimes install corrupt language pack files. In some cases, the corruption prevents a 'clean install' which leaves orphaned registry settings which may cause Windows Update and/or feature/role installations to fail. That is what happened in my case. We had to work to get to the point where we cleaned up enough corruption that we could re-install the suspect language pack and then do a clean uninstall which presumably removed the orphaned registry settings.

Whew. Mark it solved and move on with your life. :)

Basically, yes. Although I suspect an update caused all the mess when updating language pack components, not the Server installation itself.

Thank you for hanging in there with me!

Oh yes, I bet you're right. Because of course the problem didn't exist initially after the fresh install but only after something was installed, most likely an update as you suggested because Win Update breaking was the first thing I noticed before the roles/feature issue.

In case there was any doubt, you are indeed a Software Maniac.
