[SOLVED] Error 8007312; SFC /scannow and SfcFix Both Clean

That's generous of you but I would probably buy my own USB or DVD. So the idea would be to copy the ISO onto either USB or DVD? What are the chances I run into problems with the repair install for not having a serial number? Or being blocked again for not having admin privileges or other BS reasons? Thanks.

At this point there's a very good chance that we won't be able to get the repair to run. I don't want to waste any more of your time than I already have so I would like to give you options and let you decide.

1. Do a fresh install. You would need to make sure you have your QuickBooks and Office software/keys and I can assist with this. We would then download the drivers to a USB key, do a fresh install, re-install your programs and copy your data back. This is assuming you already backed up your critical data to external media.

2. I still have several other things we can try. We can start with an attempt at a repair install again. Then It will involve rebooting into the WinPE environment like we did before and running some fixes to copy some folders/files. Then we will try to run SFC and see where it takes us.

3. Even though your machine wasn't tested we can try to do an Upgrade to Windows 10. If it runs, it may work.

I'll do whatever you wish.

Thanks for outlining the options. #1 is out of the question. Let's try option #2. I'm on my way to staples to buy a USB. Are there any additional instructions or should I just start attempting the repair install when I'm ready?

We may eventually end up at option#1 but I'm willing to try absolutely everything before we do.

Step#1 - Create a Bootable USB Drive

1. Please download the following two things to the Desktop of your Working computer.
a) Rufus
b) WinPE

2. Insert your USB drive into your working computer. Note: Please ensure that there isn't anything on the USB drive that you need as we will be formatting it.
3. Right-click on rufus-2.2p.exe and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to Allow if prompted.
4. If you are asked to check for application updates. Just answer No.
5. Please click on the icon as shown below and select the ISO file that you recently downloaded.

6. Click the Start button.
7. When it's Done click the Close button.

Once this is created. You can open up the USB and run the Setup.exe to see if it will start the repair process.

Just bought a USB. Have we made enough fixes since the time the repair install failed for me that should increase the likelihood of success this time around?

"Once this is created. You can open up the USB and run the Setup.exe to see if it will start the repair process."

After formatting the USB should I restart and use boot from the USB or should I just run setup.exe from the USB without shutting down or doesn't it matter?

Thanks

Well, that was quick.

Setup wouldn't start because of two error messages. First, I got the one I've received previously: "program can't start because COMCTL32.dll is missing." Then, that error message morphed into "file autorun.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup cannot continue. Error code is [0x7e].

Bummer but at this point I'm not surprised. Critical files appear to be missing. Let's try the following. Take out the USB drive and put in the smaller one that you have that we used previously.

Copy the FRST.exe program to the USB drive.

OK, please download this file to your desktop.

Then right-click on the file and select Extract All...

In the Select a Destination and Extract Files dialog, type in e:\files and then click the Extract button.

Let me know when complete.
