[SOLVED] Errors in the cbs log

OK, I suspect that's why you are having issues. Let's see those Speccy results.

Retrieve System Information
1. Download Speccy to your desktop. The setup file will be named spsetup126.exe or something similar.
2. Double-click on this file and install it. Note: Please ensure that you uncheck any foistware that may be presented during the install (i.e. Chrome Browser install).
3. When the program opens it will retrieve some information regarding your system.
4. Once it's done, select the File menu and choose Publish snapshot. Answer Yes to the confirmation message.
5. On the next screen that comes up, choose the Copy to Clipboard button and paste this link in your next reply.

OK good. I verified that you don't have any RAID configuration. You have a C:\ drive, D:\ drive and E:\ drive all on different hard drives.

Download Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows and run the software. See if it detects both Western Digital drives and do a short test and extended test on each of them.

I always thought that was a better idea...am I wrong then, is it too much?

I ran the tests on all three drives the C Drive is the only one to fail the long test - bad sectors.

The way you have your system set up is completely fine. You have three different failure points instead of one. The issue is that the drive that your Operating System is on (C:\) appears to be failing. Make sure you have any critical data backed up that may be on the C:\ drive and then run the following chkdsk.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Repair
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk /R and then press enter. Note: There is a space after the command chkdsk and before the forward slash
6. You will get a prompt telling you chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use. Answer Y and hit enter to schedule the run at next boot.
7. Reboot your computer and chkdsk will run. Let it complete please.
8. Right-click ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

I did a chkdsk earlier which took forever and I backed up the drive last night, but where might I find the log for that please, to save doing it all over again?

Did you do a chkdsk /R <-----using the R parameter?

Or did you do just a chkdsk?

If you did a chkdsk /R then you can just do step#8 and post the log.

Unfortunately yes - so I am doing as you suggested now. Forgot to ask - what is the difference between the two please?

Basically chkdsk run by itself does a check on this disk without attempting any repairs. The /R parameter locates bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. So it attempts repairs. You never want to do this without ensuring you have a backup.

I see from the log that repairs were made. So now I would like you to run Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows again on the disk your C:\ drive. Run the extended test and let me know if it fails again.

Unfortunately that's what I expected but I like to be sure before I let you know that your hard drive is bad. I looked up the warranty on this hard drive and it expired 11/11/2014. So you will need to get a new hard drive or use your other Western Digital one for the OS as well as the D:\ drive.

This is likely why you are having the issues that you are experiencing.

That's what I thought too but can I use the C for storage as I do the others or is it totally defunct. I wouldn't mind but I only bought them just two years ago and both at the same time. The 160gb I've had for donkeys years. LOL

Since the drive is failing I wouldn't even use it for storage. It is going to completely fail at some point in the near future.

Okay fine but if I use the second drive how do I get it to boot into Windows it will be a different letter... would it be best to physically swap them over or just buy a new one to replace the C Drive?

I have plenty of external drives so no problem transferring all of my data.
