[SOLVED] Internet Explorer will not update

Yes, the computer finally allowed me to log back on. Here are the results of your previous request about IE packages:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Windows\system32>FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows

/w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart
ERROR: Files of type "Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum" not found.

I will work on the "Speccy" request now,

Your disk appears to be healthy.
I would recommend that you make a backup from all important software (Sage 50, QuickBooks, etc) on the computer to external media (CD, USB device) or a network location before doing anything else.

Are there any language packs installed on this machine?

Many of these updates are likely to already be installed, but download and run each of them anyway to confirm.

Attempt to install all IE prerequisites:

After this is complete, restart the computer then run the offline installer for IE 11 again.
Available here: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...70-4B59EA148EAA/IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe

If this fails, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and any IE11_Main.log, IE10_main.log, IE9_main.log files in C:\Windows

Don't think there are any language packs... a search for language in windows update doesn't return any results.
Tried to run IE 9 Prerequisites and received this error: The update is not applicable to your computer

Appears there was a "pending" update even though no updates are selected in windows update; but when click start button it showed an update was ready to install. Clicked shut down and it installed an update and turned off.
Powered back up... clicking start button did not show any update pending. Windows Update was green - no updates selected. Tried running the IE 9 Prerequisites again... Got the same error: The update is not applicable to your computer.

If I look at the start button now... it shows an update needs to be installed. If I shut down it installs an update but if I look at "installed updates" it only shows 2 as having been installed today. BUT, it shows IE9 having failed multiple times today even though I have deselected IE9 update in Windows Update.

It's like the machine is stuck in a loop regarding an update. If you click Shutdown - it says Installing Update one of one and then shuts down the machine. You turn the machine on and look at windows update and there are no updates selected and no updates pending. Leave the machine on for a few minutes and if you click Shutdown there is another update to install. But if you look at windows update it just shows repeated failed attempts at installing IE9.

Looks like part of the log may have been archived. Please follow these instructions to collect all CBS log files.

Please zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.persist.log and the most recent CBS CAB archive (if any) from that folder.
The problem is that the CBS.log file does not contain the information from the attempted IE9 install, it was about 3 minutes earlier.

Ryan - I've moved the LogBot post into this thread - it got tacked on to the end of a different thread.

There isn't a CBS.persist.log file in the folder.
There are 5 different Cab files - attaching the most recent one as well as the other non CBS log file in the folder

Hi rickf -

I'm going to work with zomputerwiz on your issue. I've read everything up to this point so am caught up on what has been done. I will say that you have one of the hardest issues to resolve but we can give it a shot.

It sounds like you are in a bind and really need to get this resolved quickly so I wanted to offer the following potential solution. If you have a Windows 7 Professional x64 With SP1 DVD, you can do a repair install which will likely fix your issues. It's probably the quickest route to a resolution. Your data and programs will be unaffected however all Windows Updates since SP1 was released will need to be re-installed. If you go this route I would ensure you have a good backup in case anything goes wrong.

If you would prefer to continue and try to fix this more surgically (which will take a little longer) then please follow the steps below.

Retrieve Components/Software Hives
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to that particular hive so it's not in the public form.

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, two of which are named COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE.
  • Copy these two files to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on these files on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Yes, we are in a bit of a bind and appreciate your help as well as the help of zomputerwiz.
None of our PC's has a Windows 7 Pro x64 with SP1 disk. All we got from the vendor were System Recovery Disks and the System Repair Disks I created when setting up the machines. I will work on your suggestion to Retrieve Components/Software Hives now. Give me a few minutes and I will post the outcome.
Thanks again for stepping in to help.
