[SOLVED] Internet Explorer will not update

Thanks for the info. Please do the following so I can gather more detailed info.

Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to install IE11 just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the install fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

OK, there are several things I feel need to be done. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Purge Restore Points
1. Download Delfix from here.
2. Open the program and check only "Purge system restore" and "Create registry backup".
3. Click Run.
Note: The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Please paste the log in your next reply.

Step#2 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Extract.JPG

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
8. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
9. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

14 - Remove Temp Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates

10. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

11. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

I inadvertently closed notepad after running Delfix & it didn't prompt to save :( I ran the program again and the log is attached. Hope that didn't cause us additional problems.

I just got a call from one of our convenience stores and their point of sale just crashed. I have to go check that problem out and get them up and running. Might not be able to get back to this problem until the morning. I apologize, as I really appreciate you jumping in to help with this and the rapid responses to the problem. If you don't hear back from me tonight I will get back to you on the Windows Repairs first thing tomorrow. Thanks

Windows repairs have been completed. No errors or anything and the machine restarted.

Good. Next step is to go to Windows Updates and check for updates. It will likely take a lot longer this first time since we cleared out the history. Let me know how many updates show up that need to be installed. Don't install any yet.

Thanks.

Windows Update - Check for updates produced an error in about 20 seconds. I closed updates and attempted again. It appears to be working (at least I haven't received an error yet). Finished with the following:
One important update - IE9 for Windows 7
Seven optional updates - see attached png

Good. I assume the following issue you reported is now no longer happening correct? Can you verify before we continue?

It's like the machine is stuck in a loop regarding an update. If you click Shutdown - it says Installing Update one of one and then shuts down the machine. You turn the machine on and look at windows update and there are no updates selected and no updates pending. Leave the machine on for a few minutes and if you click Shutdown there is another update to install. But if you look at windows update it just shows repeated failed attempts at installing IE9.

Not verified... the machine shows a pending update if you click Start and hover over Shutdown. Do you want me to do a Shutdown and have it attempt to install the update?

No, it likely won't work. Please do the following. Let me know if you have any issues/questions.

Revert Pending Changes
1. Boot into the Windows RE mode: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt
2. Once the command Window is displayed please follow the below steps.
3. Type notepad into the command prompt and hit enter.
4. Click the File menu in notepad and choose Open. Click on Computer on the left hand side so that you see all the drive letters. You sill see Boot (X:) and likely others. Look for the drive letter that is associated to Local Disk.
5. Once you've identified the driver letter you may cancel out of this screen and close notepad.
6. Now type the following into the Command Prompt replacing C (shown in red) with the drive letter you identified in bullet#4. Note, there is a space after C:\ as well as before the last forward slash.
DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

7. If all goes well you will see the following as the last few lines. Please let me know if you don't.
Code:
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
The operation completed successfully.

SORRY MY BAD... I should have done a hard shut down of the machine. I just did a shutdown so it of course attempted to install the upgrade. BUT, after it rebooted I checked Windows Update and it showed update successful. I opened IE and it showed "your browser has been upgraded". If I click the tools icon and do an about internet explorer it shows IE9

Should I use the same installer I have been trying or should we try something different like checking for updates and using windows update? This is the file I have been using:
IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe

A check of Windows Update shows one important update: A security update for IE9
Optional Updates include IE10 and IE11
Should I install the security update for IE9 first and then do IE10 and then IE11 providing no errors occur? Or should I just go ahead and not install the IE9 security update and jump straight to the IE11 optional install?

Showed install was successful - please restart your machine. Restarted machine & checked Windows Update. Shows IE11 was successful in Update History. Still shows the IE9 Security Update as an available Important Update. Opening the browser shows version IE11.
UPDATE:
IE9 Security update has gone away and been replaced by a Security Update for IE11

Excellent. Now continue to check for and install updates until all critical/important updates are installed. Let me know if any remain when you are all done.
