Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Unable to copy COMPONENTS file, receiving error this file is open in system. Rebooted but got the same result. I did not received any error "Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below. So I did not tried option 2.

Reboot the machine again and try the first option immediately after Windows has finished to startup.
Do option #2 if that didn't work.

A few days back I downloaded VLC media player, today I see that some of my files like SFC Fix, CBS log and the 1906 zip file which I sent you has turned into VLC media files. I have removed VLC media from my system. After I restarted my pc, the files have again turned into their original format. I have heard that VLC media files are hard to delete. As it took away the SFC Fix zip file and CBS log, how can I be doubly sure that my PC is safe.

It seems like the VLC player had set itself as the default program to open certain file types.
Please provide the COMPONENTS hive as I have asked before.

As per you, to install the Acelogix Software, I have to choose all the defaults but while installing it is asking me to choose the agreement to install. The next button only gets highlighted after choosing the agreement. The default is set to do not choose the agreement. What should I do?

On the License Agreement window, select I accept the agreement.

Downloaded and clicked finish, but it is asking me to install another program Registry Compactor. I choose no.

Good. The Registry Compactor is not needed.
Go ahead with the instructions at option#2 in message #42.

Well the Regbak(Registry Backup and Restore) is not starting if I do not download Registry Compactor. When installing Regbak first time, I clicked no for the Registry Compactor, I received this error.

Weird. Try the following.

Start Windows in safe mode:
  • Click Start.
  • Typ MSCONFIG in the search field and click OK.
  • Open the tab Boot.
  • Put a checkmark at Safe boot and select the option Minimal.
(To start Windows in Normal mode again, remove this checkmark.)
  • Click OK, next click Restart.
Windows will now start in Safe mode. This may take a bit longer as usual.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Copy this file to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the option Safe boot as shown above and restart the computer.

Right-click the file COMPONENTS on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Followed the steps but the zip file is taking Internet Explorer as the default open with file option. So I cannot view anything. Should I change the default file to notepad or what and then send it OR send it as it is and you do the changes at your end.

Use your internet browser to open the website Filedropper or WeTransfer
Follow the instruction given on those sites to upload the file COMPONENTS.ZIP.
When the upload is completed you will get a public downloadlink for the uploaded file.
Please copy and paste that downloadlink into your next reply.

Could you please tell me why has the zip file after sharing turned into a program. See the screenshot.
