Unable to run .Net updates on Server 2008 R2

New information.

What i believed was a successful install of the most recent Windows Rollup turned out to be a failure and is showing up as required in recent "check for updates" (security only update succeeded)

Subsequent attempts to install Windows Rollup - KB4512506 are failing.

Sorry to be bouncing back and forth on that detail.

Attached is CBS.log from immediately after quality rollup failure.

My initial focus was the .net updates but I'll take your direction on what to address first.

Interesting. Try the following:

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable


  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:

  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try checking for updates just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Using the .NET Collect Utility



  1. Download collect.exe and save to your desktop.
  2. Go ahead and run the tool
  3. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the needed logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.
  4. Please zip/attach to this post or if too large, send using a service such as SendSpace.
 
Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

1. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box. Right-click on cmd from the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes if the UAC prompt comes up.
2. Copy/Paste the following in to the command-prompt window and hit enter.
wmic qfe list brief /format:texttablewsys > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\hotfix.txt"

3. This will create a file on your desktop named hotfix.txt. Please attach this to your next reply.
 
Definitely, many.

But I think the list of installed updates was purged when you asked me to run the tweaks updates fix tool.

Perhaps this is all related to whatever is causing the SURT to not install? And we should investigate that specifically?

I'll take whatever path you suggest.
