I want to thank you for your help so far! This is excellent! you guys really dig in deeper than anyone! I truly appreciate you efforts. Getting this working is actually very important to me, and a critical part of my employment.

Hi,

Export registry key as hive file.
  • Open the Start menu of Windows and type CMD.
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, select the option Run as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following commands one at a time into the command prompt and press enter after each.
Code:
reg save "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices" "%userprofile%\Desktop\Devices.hiv"
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called Devices.hiv.
  • ZIP this file and attach it to your next reply.

It seems there is an third party boot loader installed by one of these tools? - MiniTool Partition Wizard Free, MiniTool ShadowMaker Beta Edition, can you confirm that?

yes, tht is correct. I use mini tool for the backup . Is that causing a problem? i "think" it was there before the system quit updating, but cant be sure.

Yes, third party bootloaders can be the cause of these problems, so I would suggest to remove this program and it's boot loader.

is there evidence that this is the problem? I'd hate to go through the process of removing it and loosing bakcup ability if it isnt necessary?

and by the way.. how do i replace the bootloader?

This error 0x8007001F at first boot is quite generic, so we'll need to rule out some things that might be the cause. But because you had troubles to open the setup logs, it could also be an corrupt user profile?

some of hte history of this machine (it is very old, back to early windows 8)

1. had an hp printer that no longer use, but some elements of hte install are stiull hanging around and wont uninstall
2. various permission problems with user accounts, I have had maybe 3 over the years for various reasons, and i run into various permission problems here or there
3. there was a viral attack, seemingly from a copy of a hard drive from a friend that i attached, since then, in the security history it lists active infections that it cant touch becasue it is on drives that no longer are atached

I'm ok removing minitool bootloader, just not sure of a safe way to do it.

There are a lot of remnants of HP, so I think we need to start here with removing all of them. Could you please perform a new scan with FRST64.exe and provide both logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt.

Do you know where the following file is used for?

==================== Files in the root of some directories ========

2017-07-24 07:44 - 2017-07-24 07:48 - 000000089 _____ () C:\Users\dsalc\run.bat

that is an old bitcoin mining file. it launches a listneer, dont need it anymore

Here's the next fix to clean-up a lot of remnants.

Start the
577bf0efb8088-FRST.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool again.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this system. Do not run this script on another system.
  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.
