Ok, all done. I did the above and it ran for several hours. Rebooted and came up fine. But... Tried the update and failed with the same error.

Where can we go from here?

Hi,

Please attach a new copy of the CBS log(s) and the following log files.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log.

interesting note. the panther logs files i do not have access to again. ill have to set permissions for access.

while tge last fix was running, the default acct it listed as using not tge acct i use to log into. so maybe something sill wrong in profiles?

Hmm, could you please create a new administrator account to see if you have access to both files.

i am actually confused about the usr accounts. over the years i have switched from using a microsoft account to local. but something doesnt seem right.

in users folder there are:
default
dsalch
dsalc
public

but the login is listed as
dsalcdsalc

the original account was (and i would prefer) dsalch but i cant find a way ro log into that one. and the one that pops up to log into (dsalcdsalch) has nonuser directory

how can i clean this up?

Please provide an export of the ProfileList, to gather more information about all the accounts.
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following command line and press Enter.
Code:
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /s > "%userprofile%\desktop\ProfileList.txt"
  • When finished, a logfile called ProfileList.txt is saved on your desktop.
  • Post the logfile as attachment in your next reply.

Open an elevated command prompt, run the following command and copy and paste the result in your next post.
Code:
reg query HKEY_USERS

C:\WINDOWS\system32>reg query HKEY_USERS

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1697430636-4132419337-2029641147-1001
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1697430636-4132419337-2029641147-1001_Classes
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Open the startmenu and copy and paste this command SystemPropertiesAdvanced and open > User Profiles > Settings.
Take a screenshot of this window and post it into your next post.

dsalcdsalc > C:\Users\dsalc is the current account, it seems C:\Users\dsalch is only a remnant of an removed account.

I would suggest to check this folder C:\Users\dsalch for personal files etc, and then remove this folder.
Then create a new account with this name if possible, if this succeeded you can migrate all the data from C:\Users\dsalc to the new user profile.
The final step is to delete MAINOFFICEPC\dsalcdsalc from the User Profiles Windows.

Perhaps, you have changed the user name that appears on the login screen I think?

You can check that in the Control Panel > User Accounts > Change user name. (This name will appears on the login and start screen).

i created the account dsalch, and set it to administrator, but it did not put the directory in USERS for it.

ok, i created an admin account called "dsalch" and changed the name that apperas for login on dslacdsalc to just dsalc

but no user directory for dsalch

This is very odd, the export does not show a new account either! Please run the following command in an elevated prompt and post the result.
Code:
icacls C:\users
