[SOLVED] [Win10v1607b14393 x64] 2017-05 Cumulative upd. fails; no problems detected by SFCFIX.

Wow. So you copied the file named COMPONENTS from c:\windows\system32\config ?

You want to make sure it's the file named components with no extension and in that location.

OK, that won't work. Unfortunately it looks like you will have to do a clean install of Windows. The COMPONENTS hive is corrupt beyond repair and their doesn't appear to be a usable backup.

If you have an OEM (i.e. Dell, HP, Lenova) machine you can likely do a factory reset but all of your programs will have to be re-installed and your data restored (so obviously make sure you have a good backup of your critical data).

Sorry, I've tried everything I could think of.

Thanks BrianDrab for all the time and efforts that you have put in for me.

I have one more question. This machine is a dual boot machine. Other boot OS is also Win 10. I have very rarely used that boot. That contains the components file, with size 54272 KB.

Do you think we can use that?

Usually you can't use a hive from another machine unless they are near identical. However since we are to the point of possibly reloading the machine I think it's work a shot. Zip up and attach that hive so I can take a look.

Make sure you have a good backup of your critical data before continuing and we'll give it a shot. Once you have a good backup, go ahead and replace your c:\windows\system32\config\components file with the one from the other machine and let me know when done. Thanks.

I have started the Image back up so that I can restore the disk back again (if necessary). It may take about 30 minutes or so. Will update when done.

The back up took much longer (the back up destination was external drive) that expected. However it is all done.

Please let me know the net steps.

Go ahead and replace your c:\windows\system32\config\components file with the good one from the other machine and let me know when done. Thanks.

Can you try the following one more time?

1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
2. Accept the License Agreement
3. Keep the default Upgrade this PC option and click Next.
4. Let this process complete the upgrade to the newest build and let me know when complete.

Sorry for the delay I had to be away for work.

I tried to install the new update, with the same behavior. It starts the install (after getting updates and various checks performed on the system), goes to about 34-38% and gives an error.

I have ordered a new disk, which should arrive next week. I will stall the new install process on the clean disk.

Thanks again for all the help. I am going to go to the donation page right now.

Let me know if you think of something in the meanwhile (or even some tips as to what precautions to take while installing on a new disk).

Thanks again.
