Can you try the following one more time?

1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
2. Accept the License Agreement
3. Keep the default Upgrade this PC option and click Next.
4. Let this process complete the upgrade to the newest build and let me know when complete.

The Media Creation Tool link is broken.

I have taken the address from the link and started the download and install process. Will update with the results.

Do you have any complete backups of this machine? Since your components hive is corrupted beyond repair I'm wondering if there is an uncorrupt version laying around on an old backup?

Also, do you know how far back your restore points go on your computer? Do you know how to check?

I may have a system back up, however it may be couple years old. It was taken almost immediately after moving from Win 8 to Win 10.

There seem to be only 4 restore points: from 12/12/2016, 7/21/2017. 7/28/2017 and 8/6/2017.

I can get a new disk and load the new windows 10 upgrade on that disk. However, I will need to install all my software all over again. Also there will the issue of migrating my license key to the new install.

Do you know how retrieve files from a restore point? I'd like to get the components hive from the 12/12/2016 restore point.

Please navigate to the following path.

C:\windows\system32\config

Right-click on the COMPONENTS file and select properties. Then choose the Previous Versions tab. Let me know if any dates come up?

There are no previous versions available.

There are multiple files in the same folder that start with COMPONETS:
Capture2.PNG

The 12/12/2016 is a Windows Image Backup and cannot be traversed down.

I can reach the file in 7/21/2017 restore point though.

We need the earlier one. Windows Image Backups are actually very easy to work with. Does the Windows Image Backup have a .vhd extension?

I have copied the file out on the desktop. It is a very small file (8KB) as compared to the existing one(9472 KB)
