Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

Any idea why my system is missing so many driver files?

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

I don't think your machine is missing any files, I think your machine is looking in the incorrect place for them. Let's do this a few more times and then maybe we'll try something else.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

Hi Brian,

So I made use of the sfcfix.exe and the sfcfix.zip copy script and managed to copy a large number of the missing files as they all seemed to be driver (inf) related from this directory on my computer:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\488053cdbca3231eeb2c2af7236d09ed

Basically any directory that fit: amd64*.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514*

This one seems to be the last one, I only seem to have manifests for it but no directory containing any driver files that the SP1 update is looking for:

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

So I needed to copy all the files in that C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\488053cdbca3231eeb2c2af7236d09ed directory, after doing so SP1 still failed, attached is the log. Relevant output:

It looks like the system.design dll is maybe corrupt or something, I think its from one of these two directories, more likely the 2nd one but I sent both to be sure.

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

I agree. Likely the second one but we'll just replace both.

Step#2 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to install SP1 just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the SP fails to install. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
11908d1430506241-windows-updates-fail-repeatedly-stop-jpg

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

Also procmon failed to load driver....does this mean I have a virus?
No. Could mean your not an Administrator of the machine or that your machine just needs a reboot before it can load it.

Step#2 - Capture Process Monitor Trace - After a reboot, let's try the Procmon step again.
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to install SP1 just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the SP fails to install. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Re: [Win7 pro] Corrupt update files

After rebooting procmon still didnt' run. I am an administrator as well. Also i'm not sure what's going on but something seems to be reverting some files or deleting them I feel like it happens everytime i run Chrome but not sure.

Here's the latest corrupted file:

Re: [Win7Professional] Corrupt update files - Can't install SP1

This one is interesting for sure.

  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.

Step#2 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Re: [Win7Professional] Corrupt update files - Can't install SP1

We are going to try a different approach. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

Extract.JPG

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open.
7. When the program opens click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
8. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
9. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:
14 - Remove Temp Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates

10. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

11. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Re: [Win7Professional] Corrupt update files - Can't install SP1

Ran the tweaking app above and then tried sp1 update, still the same errors as I've been getting with missing and corrupt files. Is there something different I should do? or should I continue to replace missing and corrupt files now in the hopes that there is an end in sight now.

It seems to always revert back to this state (which is what the latest cbs.log says now):

At which point I run sfcfix.exe with a zip that i have of all those service package files, at which point it complains about the corrupt files that I have been asking you for.

Re: [Win7Professional] Corrupt update files - Can't install SP1
