Please advise if this has fixed my computer problem or if further assistance is needed. This failure happened about 10 days after a Windows Update fix was successful. I can provide a link (if allowed by this forum) of the thread that describes the fix performed by another website forum.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi siltyclaycorvair and :welcome: to Sysnative Forums

Yes, please post the link to the thread and the list of updates failing. It would be helpful for me to figure out why the updates are failing. In the mean time, run SURT:

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I am trying another SURT installation now, and the window says it is searching for updates on this computer. This message has been running for about 75 minutes. I'll let it run for a few hours, based on past experience with my laptop problem.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

Before preparing a fix, I noticed that there are many Avast errors:
Code:
(f)	CSI C Mark Deployment Missing	0x00000000	c!avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_14.0.24210.0_49391d6d8244622b	x86_avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_14.0.24210.0_none_a338d8ea2df29efb	(f)	CSI C Mark Deployment Missing	0x00000000	c!policy.14.0.avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_14.0.24210.0_ef17e13d91c55d96	amd64_policy.14.0.avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_14.0.24210.0_none_499a1b14d5902dfc

These occur when Avast is uninstalled, but the repair depends on whether you will reinstall it or not. So, did you uninstall the Avast, and if you did, do you want to reinstall it, or already did it?

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
I installed Avast anti-virus per recommendation of Aura about a week ago and before this latest Win Update failure. I ran a scan today. I did not install it.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello CKing,
Sorry for mistake, I meant to say I did not uninstall Avast. Also, everyday when I power up my computer, it takes over an hour to run through the updates, configuration, and reverting changes back before I can log in my pasword to Windows. It is frustrating, especially since my previous handler and I spent so much time in solving the last problem similar to this, only to have it happen again 1 week afterward.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

To fix the corruptions, I would need the COMPONENTS hive

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Restart your computer, and try again. If it doesn't work, I will try another means to have the COMPONENTS file uploaded.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello,
Some info:
I needed to shut down and start my computer in safe mode to copy the components file, which I learned the lengthy way during my last fix procedure in September. I then shut down and started Windows the normal way, figuring it would take at least an hour to get to the login, but no, the login came up in a minute.
Here is the SendSpace link
sendspace | Delete File
Thank you for continuing to browse my thread,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

The Sendspace link is to delete the file, rather than to download the file. Could you please send the link again?

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

Taking a look at this, I noticed that you have some Avast! keys which is what SURT is reporting. However, it shouldn't cause update issues. Try installing the updates again, and when they fail, please attach the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Thanks for the logs. In the CBS, it is checking the availability of the updates, and I don't see any error. Most of the updates are either installed, or it is checking if it is partially installed. I am suspecting file corruption here, so running SFC here will help:

SFC Scan
1. Click on Start :startorb: and type cmd. When Command Prompt appears, right-click on it, and click Run as Administrator
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
sfc /scannow
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hello, this morning I started up my computer and I screenshot its Windows Update history for the past month. Upon startup this morning the login screen came up within moments, rather than 15 minutes to an hour other days recently. Is this helpful? CBS.rar uploaded 2 days ago.
Please help. Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Windows 7 Update failure

Hi

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am discussing with my colleagues on this. This is perplexing since there is no error in the CBS with SFC and SURT is also not reporting any significant errors. There also are quite a few updates that have failed. I am going to have you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, but before I do that, I would like to get a list of updates installed on the system:

Get List of Updates Installed
1. Click on Start :startorb: and type cmd. When Command Prompt appears, right-click on it, and click Run as Administrator
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
systeminfo | findstr /c:"KB" >%UserProfile%\Desktop\UpdatesList.txt
3. Once it has finished, attach the UpdatesList.txt on your Desktop
